The Engineering Director – Precision Optics will lead the engineering department of our world-leading Precision Optics Manufacturing Centre comprising our Ilminster (UK) and Moorpark (US) facilities. You will be responsible for leading our process and manufacturing engineering teams across our two sites and managing our precision optics manufacturing, metrology, testing and qualification equipment. Key activities will include supporting manufacturing and together with Supply Chain and Quality departments to work on ensuring parts are produced on-time, under budget and with high yields.
Reporting into the SVP & Head of Manufacturing Precision Optics with dotted line report into the Group Chief Technology Officer, you will have the opportunity to shape the business, own departmental budgets, and drive the strategy on precision optics in cutting-edge technologies, where precision, performance and reliability are key differentiators. You will be responsible for managing your team, making sure that the group has the core competencies to deliver on the business requirements and that our facilities continue to be state-of-the-art. You will lead new capital investment and NPI projects on new precision optical manufacturing and metrology equipment with the aim of increasing our addressable market, profitability levels, on-time delivery, lead times and enabling the conversion of new business opportunities.
You will work closely with other parts of the business, including business development and R&D engineering in order to align development and manufacturing activities, secure new contracts and drive challenging designs into manufacturing. You will specifically interface with other R&D Engineering Directors across the business in order to build synergies and reinforce our vertical integration capabilities in precision optical and opto-mechanical systems for Aerospace & Defense, telecommunications and life sciences.
Provide technical & management leadership to engineering and manufacturing within the Manufacturing Centre with respect to product/process design and functionality.
Maintain a collaborative relationship with global R&D, including involvement with joint projects that drive vertical integration.
Generate project schedule and financial investment plans, working with the site teams to prioritize based on strong financial and strategic justification and in line with Manufacturing Centre & Business Unit strategies (as required).
Develop, implement and deliver on engineering strategies in support of Manufacturing Centre & business units in order to drive business growth.
Drive implementation of LEAN and CI practices within function across the Manufacturing Centre.
Work on optimizing a consistent approach to maintenance (PM/TPM) for delivery to manufacturing, and ensure effective maintenance function across Manufacturing Centre (Best Practice approach on common plant)
Support Manufacturing Centre budget targets for labor optimization and material cost reduction
Drive cost reduction plans into existing processes, potentially benefitting from technology elsewhere in G&H group (i.e. best practice sharing)
Resolve issues with manufacturing when product quality risks are identified. Manage and prioritize product qualification activities across the Manufacturing Centre.
Ensure appropriate programs in training of new and existing processes, raising training and process corrective actions with manufacturing when required.
Establish best practice operational process for site technologies/processes within the Manufacturing Centre
Work with, and develop, a strong Engineering team in the sites/manufacturing center ensuring an aligned, motivated and skilled workforce.
Develop excellent relationships both internally and externally with key customers and stake-holders
At least 10 years industrial experience in optics manufacturing environment
Expertise in precision optical component fabrication and/or manufacturing
Bachelor’s Degree (BEng, BSc or equivalent) in optics, physics, mechanical or manufacturing systems engineering or equivalent
Experience in running engineering departments using industry-standard tool
Good working knowledge of configuration management, Engineering Control Order, Root Cause Analysis, FMEA/PFMEA etc
Understanding of quality management systems (AS9100, ISO) and corresponding interfaces to engineering through ECO.
Experience in driving new products through phased-gate New Product Introduction
Scorecard based KPI performance management
Tools for preventative and predictive equipment maintenance
Experience in managing engineering teams and budgets
LEAN/ Six Sigma processes (desired)
