Display Technology (IT), Holography and Diffractive Optics (FH)

The Optical Engineer will support optical design and development projects across the entire company, with a focus on head up display (HUD) technology and products. Under the supervision of a Principal Optical Engineer, the successful candidate will support business development activities with customer-specific optical designs and will help to generate new IP through R&D for next generation HUD technology. This is an excellent opportunity to apply optical simulation, design and experimental skills to the design and research of cutting-edge optical systems and HUDs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Simulate and design optics for customer-specific requirements for HUD (especially freeform optical components) to support business development.
Research and develop new optical systems based around digital holography using optical simulation and experimental optics.
Define optical component specifications.
Support the design and hands-on assembly of prototype components and fixtures.
Support root cause and troubleshooting investigations.
Support development testing and evaluation.
Develop original concepts and IP related to digital holography and HUDs.
Help to advance the state-of-the-art of digital holographic displays and HUDs.
MSc/PhD in Photonics, Physics, Electronic/Photonic engineering or a related field
Optics in theory and practice – laser optics, imaging optics, projection optics, freeform optics.
Automotive – sector knowledge and requirements for automotive testing and qualification of photonic technologies.
Displays – state-of-the-art display technologies and display characteristics (especially HUD).
Proficiency with Zemax optical design software (e.g. including macro-writing, sensitivity analysis and tolerancing).
Ability to demonstrate mathematical (geometry and numerical) skills in a problem-solving approach to 3D layout challenges.
Assembly and optimization of experimental optical setups on optical bench.
Confidence to participate in client and supplier meetings, with a diplomatic and methodical approach in resolving issues.
Proficiency in CATIA CAD systems (preferably experience in an automotive Tier One or automotive OEM).
Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD systems.
Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, C++ or similar tools for simulation of physical phenomena (especially photonics).
Drafting invention summaries to describe invention to a patent attorney.
Prefer at least 1 year of industrial optical design experience but will consider excellent graduates with considerable project work based on optical simulation and design.
