POSITION SUMMARY:
Study material interactions with lasers, optical material fabrication, and operational conditions. Characterize the behavior of materials under exposure to high laser flux with emphasis on optical devices with focus on understanding the functional and physical limits of materials.
Characterize and develop new optical materials and optical devices, including laser gain media, nonlinear crystals, and dielectric coatings.
Active communication/collaboration with other internal and external groups with targeted scope of work that is relevant to LLE's current and future needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and build experimental set ups to characterize material properties using class 3 and 4 laser systems that integrate components and instruments (lasers, power conditioning systems, spectrometers, etc.) and system controls
Conduct experiments characterizing optical materials and analyze results using existing and purpose-built tools that apply physical and numerical models
Support laser-induced damage testing experiments. Develop understanding of the principles of laser-material interactions. Investigate material modifications using an array of available characterization tool
Interface with LLE staff while collaborating on projects and supporting facility operations
Communicate research results through internal reports, publish in refereed journals, and present at internal laboratory meetings and conference settings
Participate in research proposal grant seeking and writing
Survey, study, and peer review relevant scientific literature
Responsible for maintenance of laboratory facilities
Lead new projects and research within area of expertise as needs arise
QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Optics or other relevant field

DESIRED SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE:
Experience operating characterizing, and using pulsed laser systems
Experience characterizing materials and interfaces from atomic scale to bulk scale
Strong oral and written communication skills to generate scientific reports and deliver scientific presentations
