THIS JOB IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO:
Join our R&D team in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In this position, you will design, develop, prototype, and test color and appearance instrumentation. The ideal candidate will have a broad background and interest in optical measurement technologies including optical system design, opto-electronic sensors, cameras, and algorithm development. You will take part in the entire product development cycle from ideation and customer interaction, to specification, technology selection, design, testing, and manufacturing deployment. Lab setup, prototyping and design validation are key to this position.
This position requires relocation to Grand Rapids, Michigan and offers a flexible hybrid work model to combine both in-person and remote work options. We are a global R&D organization, and you will regularly work with teams located in the US and Europe.
WITHIN YOUR ROLE, YOU WILL:
Design optical components and optical measurement systems
Conduct performance simulation and modeling of spectrophotometers and camera-based measurement systems
Select and evaluate core optical technologies including light sources, illumination and measurement optics, filters, spectrometers, and imaging systems
Conduct hands-on laboratory evaluation of concepts and prototypes
Perform system testing of prototypes and instruments to qualify performance specifications and quality
Develop algorithms for calibration and processing of color measurements and images
Collaborate with interdisciplinary project teams to realize new products from initial concept to market introduction
Manage the ISO and ASTM standards landscape for instrument compliance to standards
WE ARE LOOKING FOR A PROFESSIONAL WHO HAS:
PhD (or MS with equivalent experience), with specialization in optical sciences, optical engineering, physics and microtechnology
5+ years of expertise in optical system design including imaging and illumination design
Experience with Zemax OpticStudio, TracePro or equivalent
Experience with optical lab setup and prototype testing including benchtop testing and design of experiments
Interest in light sources, sensors, and cameras
Interest in experimental and theoretical measurement system analysis
Proficiency in data analytics with math and simulation tools such as MATLAB, LabVIEW, and Python
Strong conceptual skills and a passion for systems and solutions thinking
Experience with CAD for opto-mechanical system design is considered a plus
Coding experience in C/C++ considered a plus
Experience in color science and image processing is considered a plus
Effective communication skills
Strong will to deliver high-quality and cost-effective solutions on time
Strong team player with working experience in a multidisciplinary, multicultural, and international working environment (US, Europe, Asia)
