Position Description:
The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks applications for a Lecturer in Engineering Design with a focus on materials science and engineering, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023. The full-time position is for three years, with the second two years contingent on a satisfactory performance review during the first year. Responsibilities will include the following:
Co-teaching at least one semester of the Master's in Design Engineering (MDE) studio course (STU 1231/1232) annually. The MDE program is a collaborative degree program run jointly by SEAS and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. It is geared towards understanding complex societal grand challenges and building prototypical solutions that can be assessed for impact. The lecturer needs to be comfortable with a highly collaborative, interactive mode of teaching. Studio is both a space as well as a pedagogical setting which can best be described as project based, highly interdisciplinary, and fluid.
Teaching or co-teaching one undergraduate engineering course annually, consistent with engineering background. Examples of possible courses include:

ES123: Fluid Mechanics
ES125: Mechanical Systems
ES128: Computational Solid and Structural Mechanics
ES54: Circuits
ES159: Introduction to Robotics
ES176: Introduction to Microelectromechanical Systems
ES183: Introduction to Heat Transfer
Offering a series (~6 per term) of engineering skills practica (short, non-credit workshops) in support of targeted skill development for SEAS students. This will be done in collaboration with the SEAS Active Learning Labs (ALL) and Makerspace.
Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to working with the ALL team to plan ALL support for the MDE program and students. advising undergraduate and MDE student projects and thesis work, supporting the ES100 (senior capstone) project proposal process, working with SEAS faculty on design in the undergraduate curriculum, and working with the MDE faculty directors to support MDE student success, as well as participating in the MDE admissions process.
We seek candidates who have strong expertise in design in the context of an engineering or applied science field such as mechanical engineering, materials science, bioengineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. We appreciate a record of teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate in an engineering or related field is required by the time the appointment begins.
