The Materials Science and Engineering Department (MSE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has an immediate opening for the position of "Facilities Coordinator". Responsibilities include: Serving as Department Facilities Manager to coordinate initial placement of department personnel as well as relocations and initial set-ups of offices and research laboratories which often involve equipment delivery, set-up and support; overseeing renovations and remodeling of department areas including laboratories, offices and common areas. Responsible for the coordination of electrical power, plumbing, HVAC and other service installations and modifications, often in concert with the CMU Facilities Management Services. Serves as Lab Safety Manager, Emergency Responder, Facilities Management Services and Environmental Health and Safety liaison.
CLASSIFICATION FUNCTIONS OR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilities Project Management (25%)
Assist department leadership in planning efforts in order to ensure that lab/ office spaces, and all resources therein, are optimally configured and utilized in accordance with safety protocols.
Independently formulate plans and suggestions based on current and anticipated needs of the department to accommodate projected growth, faculty start-up requirements, and space renovations
Communicate with students, staff, and faculty about projects, implementation of safe practices, and duties.
Manages initial set-ups for new faculty, student and staff offices and research laboratories including equipment set-up and support; overseeing renovations and/or remodeling of department areas including laboratories, offices and common areas. Responsible for the coordination of power, plumbing, HVAC and other service installations and modifications
Oversee full lifecycle of project from inspiration to planning and budgeting phases, through to completion of inspection and any associated paperwork
Ensure that retrofits, upfits, construction, expansion, installations, etc., are completed in accordance with design specifications, safety requirements/ best practices, budget estimates, and within acceptable time parameters are deemed reasonable by the incumbent.
Supervise the work of contracted workers, vendors, or staff members of other University divisions contributing to the project at hand
Plan, track and communicate medium and large-scale upfit and renovations projects in department
(2) Building and Laboratory Management (30%)
Serve as the primary point of contact for all lab infrastructure needs for multiple facilities and over 20 separate research programs
Serve as a building liaison for laboratory-related maintenance and renovations in MSE-occupied buildings
Submit and track facilities modifications orders for MSE research laboratories
Purchase equipment such as highly specialized lab equipment or resources to meet needs of department
Responsible for negotiating vendor agreements, cost estimates, and contracts for lab equipment, installations, and maintenance
Engineer and design research labs across the department to create laboratory spaces capable of meeting research goals, best practices, cost efficiencies, and in keeping with the expectations of renowned faculty
Manage adherence to procedures and work standards; implement adjustments or changes to work standards; anticipates changes
Maintains an up-to-date inventory of all computers, instrumentation, tools, machines, etc. Responsible for receiving deliveries of equipment and overseeing installations as necessary as well as removal of obsolete and/or abandoned equipment. Responsible for equipment and furniture storage and the monitoring of department moving equipment and supplies
(3) Safety (25%)
Serve as Safety Manager, Emergency Responder and is the direct liaison with Facilities Management Services and Environmental Health and Safety to understand and enforce all safety issues regarding proper laboratory and equipment usage, ensuring only properly trained and approved personnel use the laboratory facilities, ensuring that all safety data sheets (SDS) are current for any materials that require them, keeping the labs secure and monitoring access control of specific areas.
Mitigate risk of damage to departmental resources by ensuring that faculty, staff, and/or students utilizing the space have received adequate safety training
Manage research design by serving as an advisor on matters such as research plan hazard review, safety procedures, standard operating procedures, etc.
Conduct regular lab equipment inspections - either personally or by coordinating with the appropriate service vendor
Engineer and design safety programs for specific research experiments and apparatus and train users.
Serve on the MSE Safety committee, working with research group representatives to promote a strong safety culture
Serves as representative on various college and university committees including but not limited to the Facility Coordinators Committee and the Lab Safety Committee
(3) Assist faculty and researchers with building and maintaining experimental apparatus. 10%
(4) A/V and Telecommunications Support 5%
(6) Performs related duties as assigned 5%

Qualifications:
HS diploma required (associates degree preferred)
1-3 years of building maintenance experience required
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
