Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Energy Analysis and Environmental Impacts Division is seeking a Career-Track Research Scientist to join the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Systems Department. In this exciting role, you will collaborate on multiple transportation analysis and electric grid modeling projects, and conduct cutting-edge research on various emerging topics related to transportation electrification, infrastructure planning and control/optimization techniques for the transportation and electric grid systems, etc.

This position requires interdisciplinary research expertise including modeling techniques of the transportation and electric grid systems, optimization and control, economic and policy analysis, etc., to support the policy assessment tasks for various agencies. You will focus on 1) battery charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure planning for the freight corridors, 2) managed/smart charging model design and development, 3) resiliency-oriented electric grid planning and operation solutions, 4) active traffic management solution development for future autonomous driving scenarios. Among other things, this will involve software tool development, such as HEVI-LOAD, to simulate the freight travel and charging/refueling behaviors, and to optimize the large-scale cyber-physical systems for various characteristics, including efficiency, resiliency, and mobility.

What You Will Do:

• Develop models and software tools to simulate freight travel and battery charging/hydrogen refueling behaviors over large geographical areas.
• Develop methods to assess the battery charging/hydrogen refueling infrastructure needs and optimize the infrastructure planning solutions with multiple geographical resolutions.
• Develop system-level and component-level control and optimization techniques to enhance the effect of select parameters on system travel, energy use, and mobility under various scenarios
• Develop optimal traffic signal control algorithms for multiple intersections and vehicle trajectory planning algorithms for connected automated vehicles (CAVs).
• Design simulation and field test scenarios to analyze the active traffic management algorithm under different CAV adoption rates.
• Develop simulation methods to assess the multi-dimensional resiliency of electric grid networks under natural disasters or artificial disruptive events, such as wildfires, etc.
• Develop computationally-efficient grid planning and operation models to mitigate the risks of extreme events, such as wildfire.
• Conduct data collection, cleaning, quality assurance, analysis, and model validation activities.
• Assist the PI in developing grant proposals in the areas of integrated transportation modeling and simulation, travel behavior analysis, and electrified transportation.
• Contribute or co-author reports and journal articles and present research work to scientific audiences and the general public.
• Participate in reporting to funders and presenting results to key stakeholders.
• Proactively engage in discussions with other research groups to gather data and insights necessary to complete interdisciplinary research.
• Keep and maintain accurate and detailed records of all research performed.

What is Required:

• Advanced degree in engineering, science or economics discipline with a strong quantitative focus.
• Demonstrated experience developing simulation/optimization solutions and conducting engineering assessments and/or economic analysis.
• Familiarity with geospatial information systems (GIS).
• Ability to work independently and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues in a dynamic environment.
• Flexible, approachable and able to prioritize and manage multiple cross-functional projects.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Proficiency with MS Office and strong skills in at least one programming language (C/C++, Python, R).
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Must adhere to all Berkeley Lab and EH&S safety policies.

Desired Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in engineering, science, or economics discipline with a strong quantitative focus.
• Three-five years of related experience beyond the highest customary degree.
• Strong experience in conducting research in energy systems, transportation systems, control and numerical optimization.
• Demonstrated publication record or papers currently under review.
• Strong experience in electrical engineering and computer modeling.
• Work collaboratively with industry and academic partners involved in projects.
• Develop skills in key software packages and work to build models that link tools together for improved automation.

Notes:

• This is a full time, 1 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
• The full salary range for this position is $87,072-$208,980. The budgeted salary range that the Lab reasonably expects to pay for this position is $132,354-$146,286. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, and certifications, and also aligned with the internal peer group.
