The Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, invites qualified candidates to apply for a full-time, teaching faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor (non-tenure track) level. This position is on a 9-month service period with an anticipated start date of Summer 2023.
The ME Department is expanding its efforts on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, leading the College of Engineering with a staff DEI specialist and a teaching assistant professor (this position) that will serve the ME community and the COE as a whole.
The UW Mechanical Engineering Department seeks to become a pioneer in integrating DEI in the engineering education of the next generation of leaders in engineering, giving them the tools they need to address societal most pressing problems with consideration for the ethics of engineering as it affects a diverse population, ensuring equitable and inclusive solutions and technologies. We aim to achieve this goal by involving the whole community in the ME Department and the greater Washington state.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an innovative and internationally recognized program that integrates DEI concepts into the undergraduate and graduate curriculum and has a direct impact on both the ME department and the College of Engineering as a whole.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses that integrate concepts from Diversity, Equity and Inclusion into the ME curriculum. Some examples of these are: ethical design, equitable energy conversion and pollution, leading diverse engineering teams, Concepts that extend beyond the Mechanical Engineering curriculum and integrate well with engineering curriculum across the UW College of Engineering, such as Civil and Environmental Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, etc.
The successful applicant will be expected to develop an internationally recognized program and to provide innovative, high-quality teaching. The candidate would also be expected to contribute to an inclusive and equitable campus environment, collaborate with members of the Department as well as other faculty and staff within the University and Affiliated institutions, participate in the Department's graduate programs, and participate in the teaching, mentoring, and training of graduate students in the Department.
The Mechanical Engineering department's research and teaching portfolio covers all aspects of the broad field of mechanical engineering, including interdisciplinary work in engineering in medicine, robotics and controls, materials, advanced manufacturing, and alternative energy. The department currently has 39 full-time tenured, tenure track, research, and teaching faculty, 372 undergraduates, 160 Master's students, 110 PhD students and 17 postdoctoral researchers and continues to grow. Must have experience developing and teaching courses that integrate concepts from Diversity, Equity and Inclusion into an Engineering curriculum
Applicants must have a PhD or or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
