The Center for Electro-optics and Functionalized Surfaces (CEFS) is seeking one postdoctoral research position. The position will be associated with a multidisciplinary research program where ultrashort pulse lasers are used to functionalize metallic and non-metallic surfaces. The position will be associated with several projects focused on basic research into femtosecond laser surface processing (FLSP) and several applications of surfaces that have been functionalized with FLSP. The postdoc is expected to be highly motivated and play an active role in the leadership and growth of CEFS into a larger collaborative research center. CEFS currently includes approximately 25 researchers (five faculty, ten doctoral students, five MS students, and many undergraduate students). The postdoc will have opportunities to be involved with federal agencies and industry to develop new research efforts around FLSP and its applications. The postdoc will be required to work with ultrashort pulse lasers as well as materials analysis equipment as described below. We are looking for an ambitious researcher who is looking to use this postdoc position to grow toward the next level of research. The position is renewable each year based on performance and availability of continued funding.
The position includes the following responsibilities:
Conduct independent research in ultrashort pulse laser-matter interactions and the use of lasers to functionalize surfaces.
Utilize several femtosecond laser systems, an ultrafast streak camera, and materials analysis techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ion sputtering, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy, and laser scanning confocal microscopy for femtosecond laser surface processing research.
Manage the operation and maintenance of several femtosecond laser systems, and materials analysis equipment.
Organize and prepare reports for sponsors, and present progress updates to sponsors.
Supervise student research assistants on a day-to-day basis and interface with collaborators.
Collaborate with research groups led by faculty from many different disciplines, including, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, and physics.
Participate in manuscript writing/preparation, conference talks/posters, manuscript/proposal review, and proposal writing.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field and experience with ultrashort pulse lasers and the interaction of these lasers with matter. Applicants should be familiar with ultrafast diagnostics and materials analysis techniques.
Preference will be given to applicants who have experience with XPS, AES, scanning electron microscopy, and laser scanning confocal microscopy; and experience in continuum mechanics (fluid mechanics and/or heat transfer).
