The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks to fill new faculty positions in two focus areas: (1) autonomous systems; and (2) robotics.
The first focus area is tied to the topic of autonomous systems within the context of Mechanical Engineering. The department is particularly interested in candidates whose research in this focus area can address fundamental challenges in topics including but not limited to: sensing; perception; data- and learning-driven automation, and computational tools to enable autonomous systems. Research in these areas is anticipated to lead to breakthroughs in applications such as: autonomous vehicles operating in complex and unstructured environments; autonomous control of infrastructure; autonomous control of multiple interacting systems; automation in manufacturing; automation in agriculture.
The second focus area of interest is tied to the broad topic of robotics. The department is particularly interested in candidates whose research is focused on: manipulation; human-machine interaction; robot dynamics, structures, materials and actuators; and robot control. Research in these areas is anticipated to lead to breakthroughs in applications such as: manipulation in complex tasks (e.g. material handling, agriculture, medicine); mobility in water, air, land, or unstructured environments; movement in spaces from nano-scale to macro-scale; and human-robot cooperation.
If appropriate to their work, candidates should describe their plans to leverage the new experimental assets in the College of Engineering's Robotics and Autonomous Systems facility to solve societally impactful engineering problems. The Robotics and Autonomous Systems facility has an aerial vehicle proving ground, a high-fidelity motion capture system, and space for potential test routes and terrain challenges for autonomous ground vehicle prototyping.
The department welcomes candidates who transcend the traditional boundaries of Mechanical Engineering and can incorporate insights from Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related disciplines to holistically address high impact societal problems related to the areas described above. When applying, the candidates are encouraged to specify in the cover letter which of the above two areas their research is better aligned with. Candidates can also choose to specify both areas if appropriate.
Teaching and developing undergraduate and graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering, mentoring graduate students and supervising their research; developing and directing a strong, extramurally funded research program; participating in departmental and university faculty governance; and contributing to professional and public service.
