We are seeking a Senior Optical Design Engineer to join our team in Portland, Oregon . You will design and develop complex optics or optical systems. (This is not a remote position; it is hybrid - 3 days in office/2 days at home). You will work on a variety of Garmin products that include optics, lenses and more!
Perform image analysis, tolerancing, non-sequential analysis and optimizations of complex optical designs
Contributes to advanced technical research on new technologies
Align and test complex optical systems and document the test results
Plan and develop experimental test programs to verify compliance to all applicable regulations and quality guidelines
Analyze test data and reports to determine if the proposed design meets functional and performance specifications
Capable of mentoring Engineer(s) 1 and 2
Direct and coordinate manufacture of optical prototypes
Able to provide review comments on many optical design aspects and other engineering areas
Make estimates on moderately complex optical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time
Knowledgeable of Industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others)
Work with Electrical Engineering to consider variations in electro-optical components
Work with Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design to create the best optical solution accounting for manufacturable tolerances and dimensional space constraints
Bachelor of Science Degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics AND a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Other requirements include:
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Demonstrated ability to develop complex optical designs and simulations that utilize refractive and diffractive elements
Thorough knowledge of optical materials for visible and IR systems and optical manufacturing processes
Excellent communication skills with the ability to drive process vendors to evaluate complex optical designs and understand the risk
