Detailed Job Description The NYS Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) is seeking an experienced scientist to lead our efforts to address emerging contaminants and chemicals of concern in New York State. In this senior level research position, the successful candidate will leverage their knowledge of green chemistry concepts and key issues facing industry and consumers, along with their demonstrated research skills to conduct applied research, build our organizational capacity, and expand our green chemistry program.
Reporting to the NYSP2I Director, the Senior Researcher, Green Chemistry, will conduct research on identified focus areas such as PFAS in food packaging and flame retardants in furniture, and provide recommendations on appropriate compliance thresholds, acceptable test methods, etc. This role will also identify high value projects relevant to key issues contributing to the environmental footprint of New York State and beyond. These projects may include coordinating sectors of key industrial partners to address common chemical substitution or manufacturing process environmental challenges, primary and/or secondary research to support NYSP2I technical assistance projects, and situational analysis to inform government policy. The Senior Researcher will also seeking funding from state and national entities to enhance staff and facility capabilities and expand the NYSP2I green chemistry program
Major job responsibilities:
Lead the NYSP2I emerging contaminants and chemicals of concern (i.e. green chemistry) program, including serving as the main liaison with the NYS sponsor on this subject. Develop the program annual work plan
Conduct secondary research to inform prospective regulations and/or legislation. Define and conduct research using advanced knowledge of scientific principles and theory. Research technical solutions for evaluation and implementation of substitutes for chemicals of concern in production processes and products
Lead proposal development to seek additional funding from state and national sources to expand program scope
Keep current with developments in relevant areas of technology. Serve as a peer coach and provides constructive advice on projects within the team. Develop organizational capability in chemical issues by overseeing relationship management with internal and external stakeholders, leading and presenting research/project results in reports, publications, white papers, meetings, or the like
Department/College Description The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute is part of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability, an applied research organization at RIT whose mission is to undertake world-class education and research programs in sustainability with major foci on sustainable production, sustainable energy, sustainable mobility and ecologically friendly information technology systems. NYSP2I is staffed by a passionate team of scientists, engineers, and administrative personnel who collaborate with companies in New York State to provide technical assistance and solutions to complex sustainability problems. Minimum Qualifications Education/Experience:
Master's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
Minimum of five years of related work experience.
Knowledge of key NY State and/or National chemistry issues
Existing network of green chemistry experts and participation in national green chemistry fora
Record of publications in green chemistry field
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ideal candidate will be a self-directed, strategic thinker
