Detailed Job DescriptionPlease note: This is a 12-month full time position, for one year, with possible renewal up to 3 years. The anticipated start date is August, 2022. The NTID PLAY Lab at the Rochester Institute of Technology seeks a postdoctoral fellow with relevant research experience in field of communication and cognitive sciences to work on two new research projects related to psychometric assessment using survey methods of language and cognitive processing in deaf and hard-of-hearing adults.
We are initiating two new studies, funded by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, employing survey research methods. One project examines parent attitudes about Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children's social and cognitive development. The other project examines how Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing college students exert in cognitive effort when engaged in multimodal learning and listening tasks. The postdoctoral fellow will lead these research projects, under the general direction of principal investigator Dr. Rain Bosworth.
The postdoctoral scholar will also be expected to independently analyze results and prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and disseminate research findings online and at meetings, workshops, and conferences.
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated research interests in alignment with the mission and goals of NTID, the SPaCE Center (
http://www.rit.edu/ntid/space), and the PLAY Lab (
www.rit.edu/ntid/playlab) and to candidates with superior analytic and communication skills. Salary is commensurate with training and relevant research experience. The position also provides paid health insurance and modest relocation benefits.
Department/College DescriptionThe newly-founded Perception, Language and Attention in Youth (PLAY) Lab's aim is to understand how early sensory experiences shape our visual, cognitive, and language abilities later in life. We study how children learn through sign language, with the goal of understanding human cognition and learning more broadly. Minimum QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. from an accredited university in psychology, communication, cognitive sciences or a related social science field, with an emphasis on quantitative and qualitative statistics
- Experience working with deaf or hard-of-hearing people
- Expertise planning surveys and conducting quantitative and qualitative analyses
- Proficiency with survey-based statistical analyses, including mixed methods, factor or Rasch analyses
- Experience with IRB protocol adherence, managing large datasets and protecting confidential data
- Record of successful academic writing and preparing data summaries and graphs
Expected Competencies:
- Willingness to develop signed communication skills and take ASL courses offered by NTID for staff/faculty professional development
- Demonstrates the ability to plan and execute research
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills
- Demonstrates potential for both original and collaborative scholarship

Preferred qualifications:
- Experience working with deaf or hard-of-hearing communities and some knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL)
- Familiarity with patient-related outcome measures (PROMs)
- Record of peer-reviewed publication or conference presentations
- Record of attaining or attempting to attain academic funding
- Experience managing or working with a large research team
