Detailed Job Description As a member of the GIS dedicated research team, this position will provide industry experience and technology know-how, supporting applied research activities and helping companies improve their competitiveness and profitability through advanced manufacturing, IoT, AR, robotics, and other Industry 4.0 concepts and technologies. This position will participate in, and lead, scoping and management of advanced manufacturing projects with companies, and will actively lead technology development efforts in advanced manufacturing and Industry 4.0 concepts.
The major responsibilities of this position are:
Act as a subject matter expert on Industry 4.0 / digital manufacturing solutions for advising small and medium scale manufacturing companies in both discrete and continuous industries.
Conduct and manage manufacturing operations improvement related engagements / transformation projects focused on application of advanced manufacturing technologies and software solutions.
Monitor the continuously evolving solutions landscape around digital manufacturing and assist companies in selecting & integrating best fit tools for effective problem solving.
Interface with customer leadership and introduce them to industry 4.0 capabilities
Coordinate, lead and execute digital manufacturing readiness assessments
Lead and support development of project proposals
Prepare reports and publications, and present/publish applied research technical results
Develop internal expertise in industry 4.0 technology areas
Periodic travel to customer locations within New York State is required.

Department/College Description The Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) is a leading sustainability research and education organization at Rochester Institute of Technology. GIS is made up of a diverse set of academic programs and applied research centers focused on the optimization of industrial systems to maximize material and energy efficiency while minimizing adverse environmental impacts. Our six industry-facing applied research centers focus on sustainable manufacturing, energy, transportation, and buildings. They work to develop advanced technologies, sustainable industrial processes and practices, and data-informed policy recommendations. Each year, about 100+ companies, governments, and other organizations engage GISs research centers on a variety of projects to solve technical problems, innovate products or processes, research manufacturing technologies, reduce their environmental footprint, or commercialize a new technology. Research center projects are led by full-time professional staff with significant industry experience.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree is required for this position in a technical discipline (mechanical, industrial, or electrical engineering, computer science) at a minimum. An advanced degree is preferred.
Lean Six Sigma / Continuous Improvement certification is a plus.
A minimum of 5 years of related work experience is required, with some active experience in developing or applying I4.0 technologies.
Must have the following experience:
Hands-on industrial experience in a product manufacturing environment, with experience in manufacturing process development.
Ability to lead groups (internal and external) in focused process improvement sessions / Kaizens by facilitating cross-functional dialog and problem discovery.
Overall Industry 4.0 domain knowledge and deep experience in at least one of the following areas: factory automation systems or robotics, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) (e.g. sensors, controls, communication protocols and networking), manufacturing software applications (e.g. ERP, MES, PLM, system interfaces, etc.), industrial IT/OT integration, process improvement through SaaS solutions.
Ability to identify and quantify digitalization impact on the P&L and/or balance sheet for manufacturing or supply chain business cases
Strong analytical/computer skills, including knowledge and exposure to analytical tools for manufacturing applications
Experience with business process mapping, problem solving, continuous improvement and lean management principles
Strong interest and capability in developing I4.0 solutions
Strong collaboration and communication, writing, project management, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
Ability to work with all levels of an organization: shop-floor / field level to management / board rooms
Preferred Skills:
Understanding of ISA-95 standard for integration of enterprise and control systems.
Experience interacting with medium to large scale customers
Experience in product and process quality management
