Columbia University's Mortimer B. The Zuckerman Institute seeks a highly skilled MR Safety Officer to support the MR Research Platform. The MR Safety Officer (Associate Research Scientist) is critical for ensuring the safety and success of the research using MRI systems within a laboratory environment.
Responsibilities include the following:
Maintaining safe working procedures for the MR environment, including the provision of MR safety education and training. Introducing safety improvements in conjunction with and under the authority of the Director of MR Research. Ensuring MRI safety and compliance with FDA, IRB, IACUC and Columbia University regulations, practices and policies. Providing MR User Training, safety policy enforcement, IRB and IACUC support and review and MR volunteer consent.
Working with Principal Investigators to provide safety input on the development and modification of MR protocols. This includes performing MRI RF safety assessment with numerical and experimental methods and EM simulation for human subject RF safety.
Ensuring all Principal Investigators responsible for personnel involved with the MR system are informed of the formal procedures for training and authorization. Ensuring staff groups and students exposed to the MR environment are educated appropriately on a regular basis as to the safety requirements and updated as necessary.
Ensuring adequate written safety procedures, work instructions, emergency procedures and operation instructions are issued to all concerned. Ensuring proper policies and procedures for day-to-day MR safety are enforced. This includes ensuring there is a clear policy for purchasing, testing and marking all equipment that will be taken into the MR-related critical areas.
Being readily accessible and available (e.g., to the operators of the MR system) at all times that the MR facility is accessible.
Managing an MR safety laboratory, conducting MR safety related research, collaborating with MR safety projects and implementing new MR safety methods.
Disseminating research results through patent applications, grant applications, abstracts, publications, trainings and presentations.
The MR Safety Officer (Associate Research Scientist may apply for their own grants and perform independent research, if desired, provided job requirements are met.
Mentoring students, training, supporting and collaborating with staff and faculty of investigators, as well as, performing additional duties and special projects as assigned.

M.D., Ph.D. or doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering
Five (5) years of professional research experience
Must be responsible, organized and possess a strong attention to detail
Ability to work independently and also in a team environment
Strong communication (oral/written) and interpersonal skills
Strong candidates will be interested and focused on interdisciplinary work.
Specific training in electromagnetic modeling, thermodynamic/heat transfer modeling, RF power electronics, RF power testing, thermometry calorimetry and magnetic resonance imaging physics is highly desired
AAPM certification is also highly desired
