Research Engineer III/Sr. Research Engineer I, ECUAS Lab DirectorAbout the OpportunitySummary and Responsibilities:Kostas Research Institute at Northeastern University, LLC is seeking a motivated electrical and computer engineer for the position of Lab Director at Research Engineer III or Senior Research Engineer I levels, commensurate with qualifications. The lab director will join a rapidly growing institute to conduct cutting edge R&D related to unmanned and autonomous systems in the Expeditionary Cyber, Unmanned Autonomous Systems (ECUAS) Lab at our Innovation Campus in Burlington, MA (ICBM). The ICBM is home to one-of-a-kind research and test facilities for conducting activities related to a multitude of drone, unmanned, and autonomous system technologies. It consists of a state-of-the-art collaboration center, as well as indoor and outdoor test ranges for testing aerial and ground systems and other devices such as antennas, navigation, and communications equipment. The lab is designed to be flexible and configurable to support current and future R&D activities related to UAS/UGS, to advance the state of the research and solve real world problems. Targeted research, development and test activities include counter-UAS (including electromagnetic effects), counter-counter-UAS, antennas, networking, Cyber (vulnerability analysis/exploitation and system hardening), forensics, predictive analytics, autonomous operation, swarms, artificial intelligence/machine learning, machine vision, and UAS sensor technology for detection and tracking.
The successful Director will use their research and development, as well as research and business management experience to create and manage new and ongoing research initiatives. The ECUAS Director will help with proposal development and writing to apply for funding, document ongoing and completed research, and direct the operations of the ECUAS Lab, including using expert knowledge in operating most of the equipment in the lab, including Anechoic Chamber operations, SDRs, drones, GNSS, EW, and EMP equipment. Other duties include overseeing a small staff of engineers, aiding both internal Northeastern and external R&D groups with conducting experiments involving drone and wireless devices in the anechoic chamber and outdoor lab facilities.
Qualifications:Education
- MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field with at least 5 years of relevant work experience,
- or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field with 3 years of relevant experience.
Skills/Attributes desired
- Experience as leader/manager of R&D project team.
- Ability and initiative to collaborate with internal/external customers.
- Ability to define, propose, and lead independent R&D; lead/contribute to proposal development.
- Experience in design/development of state-of-the-art solutions to complex technical problems.
- Experience leading advanced prototype development programs that include requirements, analysis, modeling & simulation, software and hardware integration, test, and demonstration.
- Experience providing technical and management leadership to a diverse team of scientists and engineers, managing staff resources and financial responsibilities.
- Experience with wireless and RF systems including software defined radios and digital signal processing, electronics test and measurement equipment, drones or other cyber-physical systems, programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java, and Matlab.
- Understanding of GPS and other navigation systems, distributed active/passive radar and EW, machine learning systems/frameworks, simulated/emulated RF environments, HWIL techniques.
- US Citizenship with ability to obtain clearance required; active DoD security clearance or above with ability to obtain Special Access clearance desired.
