IT ARCHITECT MGR 1 (Technical Director High Performance Computing Core Facility)Department Description
Job Summary The Technical Director of the UC Davis High Performance Computing Core Facility (HPCCF) leads a team of HPC system administrators in the development and operation of cutting-edge research high-performance computing systems, supporting a large and diverse scientific user community. The large Linux-based HPC clusters on the UC Davis campus utilize high performance computing (both scalar and GPU processors), distributed data storage systems, and high-speed/low-latency networking.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS - Ability to stoop, bend, use an 8-foot ladder.
- Lift up to 35 lbs to maneuver computing equipment; a handcart is available.
- Ability to walk, bike, drive or take other transportation to various campus and City of Davis locations.
- Ability to travel to occasional national conferences and meetings.
WORK ENVIRONMENT - Employee is personally responsible for following safety procedures/guidelines.
- Occasionally required to work non-standard hours including evenings, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSAdditional Minimum License/Certification: Minimum Education/Experience: - B.S. or B.A. degree in Computer Science or related field, and 5+ years of high performance computing experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience; graduate degree in related field and 3+ years of high performance computing experience.
- Systems administration experience in large-scale Linux environments; experience with networking hardware and software; experience building, maintaining and tuning high performance computing systems and software with associated cluster interconnect networking and data storage hardware; experience in software engineering and automated deployments.
- Experience in developing, reviewing and implementing standard operating procedures and policies; supervisory and budget authority of an organizational unit and staff; planning and coordinating a program, managing grants/contracts; providing liaison with customer/provider groups; and interpreting federal or state regulations.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : - Demonstrated management, conflict resolution and leadership skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSAdditional Preferred License/Certification:Preferred Education/Experience: - Experience in an academic environment with the setup and administration of production servers and services including: web servers, IPv6, DNS, DHCP, scalable data storage systems, databases and backup services.
- Experience with virtualization and cloud technologies.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : - Demonstrated knowledge of developing and executing business plans including strong customer service orientation with experience in developing technical written materials with a proven track record of delivering mission critical projects on time, in scope and within budget; experience in marketing, promotion and development.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse user community orally and in writing, including: students and scientists with a broad range of systems expertise, students and scientists with much systems expertise, educators, administrators, and vendors.
