The University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) is a research and development center with an international reputation for developing instrumentation for both terrestrial and space flight applications. SSEC's mission includes the support of faculty and academic staff led research, development, fabrication and implementation of space flight experiments, as well as the development of new meteorological research tools for national and international use.
This position seeks a qualified individual to support both the SSEC/CIMSS Satellite-based Cloud and Atmospheric Product Retrieval Group and the Polar Radiant Energy in the Far Infrared Experiment (PREFIRE) Group.
The successful candidate will work with a research team conducting retrievals of atmospheric cloud and related products from various polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites. Focus for current satellites will be on the U.S. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R series and the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) series. The candidate will also conduct prelaunch analysis and software development for the PREFIRE CubeSat satellites and Geostationary Extended Operations (GeoXO) series. They will also assist in the development and testing of improved methods for various aspects of satellite data retrieval methods, leading to implementation in the data processing systems. Finally, the candidate will assist in testing and development of storage and distribution systems serving large satellite data products.
The position requires the ability to work creatively, independently and as part of a team. The candidate must have effective writing and communication skills and is expected to pursue collaborations with experts nationally and internationally. The candidate is expected to contribute to professional journal articles, assist in proposal preparation, and to make technical presentations at national and international scientific meetings.
This position is located in the Scientific Computing operational area.

Required Master's Degree in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Computer Science, or related field.
Knowledge and experience in manipulating and analyzing large data sets is required. Strong technical background in computing within a UNIX environment is necessary. Proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Python, Fortran, and IDL is required. Candidate must be familiar with shell scripting and data formats such as hdf, netcdf, and grib.
Background in scientific programming, satellite-based remote sensing applications, and processing output from Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models are desired. Experience implementing software for satellite measurement processing, specifically with processing systems that generate weather and climate decision support products, is an asset.
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. This will be reviewed on an annual basis, corresponding with the campus fiscal year.
Appointment Type, Duration:
Minimum $58,000 Maximum $90,000 ANNUAL (12 months) Depending on Qualifications Salary will commensurate with advanced degree or substantial experience.
