The Exoplanet Technology Laboratory (ET Lab) at Caltech is seeking a research associate to continue the development of the Keck Planet Imager and Characterizer front-end instrument in preparation for future science opportunities. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and facilitation of the KPIC operations software and the software implementation of additional observing and calibration modules. The position will also involve developing control software for the High Contrast Spectroscopy and Vortex Fiber Nuller Testbeds, two ET Lab facilities dedicated to the development of technologies for the imaging and characterization of exoplanets.
Essential Job Duties
Has authority on the software architecture of Caltech-built instruments (i.e., KPIC) for W.M. Keck Observatory and will directly interface with the Observatory software engineering team and software infrastructure.
Make key decisions on a daily basis on the organization of the instrument software to satisfy its scientific and operational requirements.
Draft test plans and submit them to the science and engineering teams and PI for review on a quarterly basis.
Write Python and Matlab software for instrument control and operations.
Possible travel to the Keck Observatory.
Perform other related duties.
Undergraduate degree in physics, mathematics, software engineering, or another related field.
One (1) year or more of research experience in the area of astronomical instrumentation.
Basic experience with C/C++.
Familiarity with high contrast imaging techniques, wavefront control algorithm, and various operating systems including Centos08/07, Linux/Ubuntu, and Windows 10 Docker.
