The Associate Director of Software Engineering will be responsible for providing technical leadership across all software development/engineering practices including EagleApps. This role will promote software engineering best practices and standards to achieve the highest code quality and performance. The Associate Director will work with the EagleApps product team, scrum masters, internal and external stakeholders to validate technical delivery requirements and to ensure work is aligned with business goals and objectives. This role will also coach, mentor, and lead a diverse group of software engineers, helping them to grow technically and professionally.
Directs and oversees the software engineering function in developing, releasing, and maintaining software applications/operating systems according to business needs. Establishes policies and procedures that produce a high-quality software product and service. Manages technical integrations and relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Responsible for building and supporting a growing software organization. This position will clarify team roles and responsibilities, will help build software development practices to ensure software delivery in a predictable manner, help define tools and processes to improve the quality of the code we produce, and provide mentorship to our software engineers and developers. In this collaboration the Associate Director also coordinates and communicates development activities and priorities with the senior ITS leadership and business partners in order to ensure the successful completion of project objectives.
Functional & Technical Competencies: * Technical Expertise: Ability to build scalable enterprise software, as well as experience providing leadership and direction to others in how to efficiently solve complex engineering challenges. Ability to implement and maintain critical engineering practices such as test driven development / behavior driven development; continuous integration and continuous delivery and implement formal technical design, code review and sign off (as part of the build and deploy process), integration and unit testing practices and corresponding metrics to inform continuous improvement activities. * Team Leadership: Ability to influence and inspire high performing engineering teams, where team members take initiative along with a consistent ability to attract, assess, select, develop, and retain the best talent. * Results-Oriented: Be able to lead and manage engineering teams to release products to enterprise customers that are of high-quality in a fast-paced, continuous deployment environment. * Collaboration and Influencing: Experience in a highly collaborative role working closely with the senior ITS and business leadership in defining long-term organizational software strategies and roadmaps. Coordinate and communicate development activities and priorities with the senior engineering leadership in order to ensure the successful completion of project objectives that are aligned with business needs. * Strategic Orientation: Ability to help drive the strategy, architecture, and development of the university's software solutions. In this capacity, the Director Engineering develops and implements software engineering strategies meant for the development of technological tools and processes required for current and future software development. Perform engineering design evaluations and ensure the completion of software projects within resource, budget, and scheduling restraints.
Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $124,250 to $155,300; salary commensurate with relevant experience.
Bachelor's degree required, Computer Science or related field. Advanced degree is a plus. - Excellent written and verbal communications skills, able to communicate across all levels of the organization. - Strong analytical, procedural, creative, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. - 5-7 years of software engineering management experience overseeing teams of engineers/developers - Proven track record of managing engineering teams and delivering high quality software. - Experience in Agile software methodologies - Experience with Agile lifecycle development and tracking software such as Jira for task management and Git for source control. - Fluent with: Java, Spring, Python, API development, cloud-based development (AWS & GCP), microservice architectures, SQL databases - Well versed with development & project management tools such as Jira/Confluence, etc. - Experience in developing applications for web and mobile platforms - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills - Ability to manage expectations of all stakeholders involved in the project(s) and give clear and meaningful follow up/updates when appropriate - Prior experience with test planning, unit testing, test coverage, and other testing best practices - Experience with automation tools required for continuous integration and continuous delivery - Process-oriented with a strong knowledge of Agile/Scaled Agile processes, and focusing on quality & continual improvement Preferred/Desired: - Experience managing cross-functional software developers and engineering managers as well as demonstrating knowledge and interest in new and emerging technologies and in software development tools. - Experience in DevOps and methodologies, for example, CI/CD through test, full build, and deploy automation workflows and tools.
