About the role:
As the Ultrafast Laser Engineer you will spend the majority of your time building and orchestrating the production of ultrafast Ti:sapphire laser systems and nonlinear frequency conversion systems, with up to 25% of time supporting installation and field service of our laser systems. You will be an integral member of a highly accomplished team bringing the most advanced ultrafast laser technologies to the market.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Integrate, test, and optimize ultrafast lasers and harmonic generation systems, including troubleshooting
Record data and notes for internal and customer-facing documentation
Build and test optical subsystems and develop work instructions in coordination with the Production Manager and Product Managers
Install completed systems at customer sites throughout the world
Support customers with fielded systems through remote technical support and onsite visits
Use data from customer service to identify areas for engineering improvements and collaborate with the engineering group on solutions
Requirements and Qualifications:
Laboratory experience with lasers and high-harmonic generation or closely related field
Ability to work successfully both independently and within a team, and coordinate with multiple internal and external stakeholders
Experience with ultrafast laser diagnostic equipment.
Experience with assembly, alignment, and troubleshooting of lasers and complicated optical setups.
Knowledge of laser technology, laser and optical design and modeling, optical components and materials from UV to IR, and optical metrology and measurement equipment.
Familiarity with diffraction gratings, polarization optics, reflective optics, beam telescoping, and general laser principles.
Excellent understanding of the interplay of structural, optical, and thermal design features on system performance.
Experience with high-vacuum and/or ultra-high vacuum systems
Ability to travel 25% of time to install and service fielded laser systems, including international travel.
Outstanding communication, technical writing, and time management skills.
BS degree in optics, physics, or related engineering discipline
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with manufacturing scientific equipment
Experience through education and/or professional experience building fs-class laser systems in a production environment.
Experience with engineering documentation, bill of materials, work instructions, and assembly process documentation for new products.
Experience with design for manufacturing and design for cost.
Experience in applications engineering.
Coding ability in language such as Python, Matlab, or LabVIEW
Customer relationship management and field installation/service experience.
MS degree in optics, physics, or related engineering discipline
