Cancer Research Breakthroughs Begin with Employees Like You
The Merchant Laboratory is studying how tumor cells interact with their microenvironment and how this interaction contributes to the development and maintenance of cancer. In particular, the Merchant Lab is interested in how immune cells are trafficked into the tumor space and how immune cells can be harnessed to treat cancer.
Are you ready to apply your skills?
The Merchant lab is seeking a Research Bioinformatician I who can provide bioinformatics analysis of imaging mass cytometry (IMC). Our lab runs the imaging mass cytometry/CyTOF core facility at Cedars-Sinai. Imaging mass cytometry allows for highly multiplexed (35+ markers) imaging of immune and tumor cells, with spatial information and subcellular resolution. Imaging mass cytometry can be applied to all tissue types including cell lines, organoid, frozen section and FFPE fixed archival tissue. Experience with digital pathology, multiplex immunohistochemistry, CyCIF, image analysis, and/or GIS analysis would be highly preferred. Collaborations with other investigators at Cedars-Sinai allows access to data from single cell RNAseq, mass spec proteomics, and metabolic studies of immune cells. The goal is to generate publications and presentations that will advance the field of cancer immunology. Other opportunities to study computational and bioinformatic problems related to COVID-19 and T-cell receptor sequencing are available.
In addition, the Research Bioinformatician will be responsible for the following:
Provides general bioinformatics analysis support for IMC projects, assist in development, testing and maintenance of software pipelines for IMC data analysis, statistical analysis, pathway analysis, and visualization.
Summarizes data analyses results in the form of visualization plots & reports to aid in preliminary interpretations of the data.
Software-engineering to improve usability, extensibility and scalability of existing programs including development of custom software interfaces & automation/optimization/parallelization of tasks.
Helps to identify, evaluate, and incorporate relevant algorithms and software pipelines by reviewing pertinent literatures in bioinformatics and computational biology.
Works with the PI and core collaborators on standard and complex research projects to customize analysis of data.
Develop web-based custom analytics and data management applications and tools to facilitate large-scale data analysis.
Education:
Bachelor OR Master of Science Degree in Computer Science, Electric Engineering, Computational biology, or Bioinformatics, or Bachelor or Master of Science/ Engineering in relevant fields (e.g. Biology with strong quantitative training, biostatistics with concentration in bioinformatics)
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of experience in a research environment.
Background and work knowledge in algorithms, scientific computing, and machine learning or statistics.
Familiar with python, R and the Unix (Linux) environment
Experience in manipulating, analyzing, and annotating large data sets both in exploratory and pipelined fashions
Providing healthcare for more than 100 years, Cedars-Sinai has evolved into one of the most dynamic and highly renowned medical centers in the world. Along with caring for patients, Cedars-Sinai is a hub for biomedical research and a training center for future physicians and other healthcare professionals. This attracts exceptional talent to Cedars-Sinai, including world-renowned physician-scientists who seek a place where they can both conduct research and see patients--the ideal formula for discovery and its translation into cures. Our patients benefit from access to doctors at the top of their fields, and our researchers have an ideal community in which to study the impact of healthcare challenges, and reflect that knowledge in their research. The greater Los Angeles area in which Cedars-Sinai resides possesses unparalleled cultural and ethnic diversity which offers outstanding opportunities for translational and clinical research and a dynamic environment for medical education.Although community based, Cedars-Sinai is a major t...eaching hospital affiliated with the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Cedars-Sinai has highly competitive graduate medical education programs in more than 50 specialty and subspecialty areas, a graduate program in biomedical sciences and translational medicine, a clinical scholars program directed towards junior physicians with aspirations to become clinical scientists, and post graduate training opportunities. There are more than 250 full-time faculty members at Cedars-Sinai. The voluntary medical staff, comprised of more than 2,200 specialty board-certified or board-qualified physicians, represent all of the specialties and subspecialties and collaborate with full-time medical staff in the teaching responsibilities of the graduate medical education programs.
