Senior Electronic Instrument Engineer
Caltech
Job Category: Fulltime Term
Exempt Overtime Eligible: Exempt
Benefits Eligible: Benefit Based
Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that marshals some of the world's brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions. We thrive on finding and cultivating talented people who are passionate about what they do. Join us and be a part of the diverse Caltech community.
Job Summary Caltech scientists are now embarking upon a major project to develop nanotechnology that will enable deep profiling of the single-cell proteome and metabolome. This work is being pursued in close collaboration with Thermo Fisher Scientific. To advance this effort, a cohort of scientists/engineers will be hired to work at Caltech (Pasadena, CA, USA) in complementary areas spanning: proteomics and single-cell analysis, nanosystems development, high frequency/microwave engineering, optics and integrated photonics, software-defined instrumentation, and bioinformatics enabled by AI/machine learning. This job posting is part of the effort to launch this project.
This job posting solicits applicants for a position as senior electronic instrumentation engineer. Successful applicants will possess deep skills in precision electronic measurement instrumentation. They will become a key members of the team creating transformational instrumentation for single-cell proteomics. The engineer will work directly with the principal investigator; his/her principal responsibilities will include: conception, planning, modeling, assembly, and characterization of ultra-low noise nanodevice readout (including cryogenic electronics), dc to microwave circuit design, software-defined instrumentation for massively-muliplexed baseband analysis, and software for instrument control. Successful candidates will possess broad and deep knowledge and a track-record of successful projects in these areas.
Essential Job Duties The job tasks will comprise of all aspects of the construction of ultrasensitive, multiplexed measurement instrumentation within a highly collaborative team effort populated by other world-class experts. The engineer is expected to contribute to most, if not all, of the task areas listed above. Specifically, these include:
- Electromagnetic modeling via CAD software such as COMSOL and HFSS.
- Design and simulation of electronic instrumentation using Spectre or equivalent, and circuit layout using Altium or equivalent.
- Development of instrument control including synchronizing and interfacing between different system modules with LabVIEW, MATLAB and other software.
- Analysis of the instrument operation via analytic calculations and simulations with Python and/or MATLAB.
- System evaluation using precision electronic measurements; and network, spectrum, and logic analysis.
- Development of multiplexed microwave and baseband signal and data acquisition systems - including software-defined instrumentation - for high speed, high throughput measurement and operation.
Other job requirements:
- The engineer can independently, effectively, and expeditiously complete R&D (research and development) tasks.
- The engineer can work in a team of different expertise and harmoniously contribute to a large, complex project.
- The engineer can quickly provide clear documentation for design and analysis and is capable of providing detailed notes on the ongoing work.
- The engineer can generate detailed written instructions (standard operating protocols) for engineering operations.
- The engineer can assist in training, qualification, and supervision of technical and junior personnel.
Additionally, successful candidates:
- May be required to travel infrequently for this project.
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, experimental physics or related disciplines. Advanced degree desired.
- Four or more years of technical experience in precision instrument development, with expertise demonstrated by successful completion of complex instrumentation projects.
Preferred Qualifications - PhD or Master's degree in in electrical engineering, experimental physics or related disciplines.
- An extensive track-record in successful creation of complex measurement instrumentation.
- Experience in of EtherNet/IP and FPGA programming.
