About the role
Are you a skilled engineer or computer scientist with a drive to ensure that software meets stringent requirements and no tolerance for accidents? Do you understand software development activities from one end of the lifecycle to the other? Would you like to work with leaders in the fields of software engineering, cybersecurity, and AI on a project that matters to the Department of Defense (DoD) and the nation? If the answers are yes, we are looking for you to lead a team of software engineers to ensure the software safety for the most powerful type of weapon ever built.
We seek an expert Lead Nuclear Surety Software Engineer to join our team for an exciting opportunity. You will conduct nuclear surety verification and analysis to ensure that software does not violate nuclear safety standards. You will collaborate with a team of engineers and scientists on methods to improve nuclear surety activities through Agile verification processes, hardware simulation tools, and improved regression automation techniques. And you'll work in a brand-new lab with cutting-edge tools using the most advanced testing and verification methods.
What you'll do
- Design and execute tests to verify real-time requirements of embedded software and to verify that software meets requirements
- Use static, dynamic, and complexity analysis software tools to identify areas of software that might require additional verification
- Conduct technical nuclear surety analyses on software and field-programmable gate arrays to obtain and maintain nuclear certification and monitor for compliance with applicable DoD, U.S. Strategic Command, and Air Force directives, manuals, and instructions
- Develop failure mode and effects analyses, fault trees, signal path analyses, and technical risk assessments
- Ensure that maliciously altered software has not been inserted into the system and unknown content has not been introduced
- Conduct risk and vulnerability analyses to support acquisition program development
- Analyze safety/security evaluations of software design of nuclear command & control and communications subsystems
- Ensure that design and implementation comply with Air Force Manual (AFMAN) 91-119: Safety Design Criteria for Nuclear Weapon Systems Software
- Develop, review, and coordinate Nuclear Safety Analysis Reports, Nuclear Certification Plans, Software Certification Plans, and Certification Requirement Plans
- Collaborate with your team to provide technical support to the Nuclear Certification Manager on activities related to Air Force Instruction (AFI) 63-125: Nuclear Certification Program
- Present technical material to the Nuclear Surety Working Group and other Air Force review boards
- Provide direction for Nuclear Safety Design Certification compliance, including
- weapon system specifications
- weapon system architecture
- compliance documents (DoD Directives, DoD Instructions, AFIs, and AFMANs)
- integrating data into a model-based system engineering environment to produce required artifacts for nuclear certification in accordance with AFI 63-125
Who you are
- You have a BS with 10 years' experience, MS with 8 years' experience, or PhD with 5 years' experience in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with professional experience as a software developer, software engineer, or verification engineer in a team environment.
- You understand the DoD systems engineering lifecycle.
- You have experience with DoD nuclear weapon systems or civilian nuclear software systems.
- You have performed software safety analysis for nuclear operations.
- You know how to apply nuclear safety and nuclear security techniques.
- You have used DoD nuclear surety policy and processes or equivalent National Nuclear Security Administration nuclear safety policy and processes.
- You understand AFMAN 91-118, AFMAN 91-119, or other DoD or civilian standards regulating safety evaluation and design criteria for nuclear weapon systems and system software.
- You are proficient in the C and C++ software development languages.
- You have developed or analyzed embedded software built using modern real-time operating systems.
- You have developed embedded software tests and performance instrumentation and interpreted the results.
You are able to
- Pass a background check and obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.
- Spend about 25% of your effort traveling to other SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings, with most travel within a 50-mile radius of your home location.
- Spend at least 80% of your weekly effort onsite in either an SEI or customer facility.
Who we are
The SEI helps advance software engineering principles and practices and serves as a national resource in software engineering, computer security, and process improvement. The SEI works closely with defense and government organizations, industry, and academia to continually improve software-intensive systems. Its core purpose is to help organizations improve software engineering capabilities and develop or acquire the right software, defect-free, within budget and on time, every time.
