The John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks qualified candidates for the position of Graduate Program Advisor and Lecturer for Harvard University's graduate program in computational science and engineering, housed within the Institute for Applied Computational Science, where students and faculty are solving real-world problems and conducting innovative research through the use of mathematical models, algorithms, systems innovations and statistical tools. With an interdisciplinary education and research mission, the Institute also holds biweekly seminars, public workshops and conferences, and works closely with industry partners.
The Graduate Program Advisor and Lecturer has several key responsibilities related to the master's in computational science and engineering (CSE) graduate program overseen by IACS.
The role is critical part of the IACS academic advising team, led by the Director of Graduate Studies for the CSE program and the Associate Director.
Academic responsibilities, including teaching, will be supervised and mentored by the faculty program director of the CSE program.
This is a one year term appointment with the possibility of renewal. We are recruiting for 2 openings for this role.
- In coordination with the academic advising team
- Serves as the primary or secondary academic advisor for graduate students in IACS master's of computational science and engineering degree program.
- Shares responsibility for advising students in the IACS Secondary Field programs about courses and other matters related to the secondary field.
- Supervises completion of each student's Plan of Study, monitors student progress and works with the SEAS Office of Academic Programs to document completion of requirements for all IACS graduate programs.
- Helps master's students find thesis advisors and provide oversight of second year students as they complete their thesis research.
- Serves as an intellectual mentor and advisor to students in their development of independent study projects and theses.
- Shares responsibility for the review of applications to the graduate programs administered by IACS; coordinating the reading of applications with IACS staff and faculty committees.
- Advises students who express interest in applying to the graduate programs in computational science and engineering.
- Works with the faculty committees and the IACS team in the continuing assessment and improvement of the Institute's curriculum in order to stay abreast of the latest developments in computational science and engineering.
- Oversees the collection and analysis of data for evaluation and assessment of the IACS graduate programs.
Other duties as assigned.
Teaching
The position includes an opportunity for a concurrent unpaid lectureship with responsibility for teaching or co- teaching up to two graduate-level courses as assigned annually.
Contributes to Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging efforts for staff, faculty and students in the IACS master's degree programs

This position requires a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or another field of science or engineering.
The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to education and mentoring, experience with advising and curriculum/program development and the ability to work collaboratively with people with diverse backgrounds and at all levels.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated excellence in computational methods and approaches and have experience in software engineering, analysis, modeling or simulation.
