Position Description The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar, under the direction of Assistant Professor Dan Turner-Evans. The postdoctoral scholar will lead research projects aligned with the Turner-Evans labs aim of linking neural network connectivity and cellular biophysics to neural circuit function. The lab uses the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as our model system. The complete wiring diagram of the central brain of the fly was recently mapped out using electron microscopy. The postdoctoral scholar will derive hypotheses about neural circuit function from this connectivity map and test these hypotheses with the powerful genetic tools that are uniquely available in the fly. The postdoctoral scholar is expected to use two photon calcium imaging of neural activity indicators as part of their approach. The labs experimental approaches also include two-photon imaging of animals behaving in virtual reality, cell type-specific perturbations, fluorescence in situ hybridization, receptor tagging, modeling, and more.
Prof. Turner-Evans is determined to be a good mentor and to offer opportunities to advance the postdoctoral scholars scientific career. These opportunities will include exciting research projects, strong academic interactions and collaborations across the neuroscience and other biology laboratories at UCSC, and mentorship, teaching, networking, and scientific communication experiences. For additional information, please feel free to contact Prof. Turner-Evans or refer to the lab webpage:
http://t-e-lab.com/.
Applicants with expertise in calcium imaging, electrophysiology, molecular and cellular neuroscience, Drosophilids, animal behavior, dynamical systems, physics, engineering, and/or programming are strongly encouraged to apply.
