Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Scientific Data Division has an opening for a Software Engineer for Scientific Data Systems to join the team.
The Scientific Data Division fosters breakthrough discoveries through the application and development of novel data science methods, technologies, and infrastructures in partnership with science domain experts. We perform focused research and development in the areas of data driven modeling and analytics, scalable methods, data lifecycle and infrastructure, digital integrity, security, and privacy for scientific computing, and sustainable software engineering with deep science partnerships.
The Usable Software Systems (USS) and Integrated Data Frameworks (IDF) groups in the Scientific Data Division (SciData) have an immediate opening for a Computer Systems Engineer (CSE), who will join a team that is engaged in a wide array of research and development projects. This position will work with researchers and application scientists from the DOE Office of Science community, and faculty and students from universities both nationally and internationally, on a wide array of software development and data science problems serving the broader SciData mission.
What the Computer Systems Engineer II will do:
Design and develop, as part of diverse teams including domain scientists, software solutions to enable scientific research.
Deploy, install, configure, integrate, and test software solutions.
Apply machine learning methods to problems in various scientific disciplines.
Collect, manipulate, and analyze data related to scientific computing systems.
Provide input to domain science and/or computer science research papers suitable for submission to peer-reviewed venues.
In addition to the above, the Computer Systems Engineer III will:
Coordinate and/or lead the development and science teams on requirements and features.
Coordinate and/or lead the software development process for the team.
Present to audiences within and outside the lab.
Required Qualifications for the Computer Systems Engineer II:
Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience; or three years and a Master's degree; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Proficiency programming in Python and exposure to other procedural or functional programming language(s).
Experience using one or more advanced computing technologies such as parallel programming, cloud computing, AI/ML, databases, and computational workflows.
Ability to conduct analysis and work independently.
Excellent English written and oral communication.
Strong interpersonal skills for working in a diverse team environment.
Additional Required Qualifications, Computer Systems Engineer III:
Bachelor's degree and 8 years of related experience; or six years and a Master's degree; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Demonstrated experience with the entire software development process, from requirements through design to implementation and deployment.
Desired Qualifications for the Computer Systems Engineer II:
Experience with parallel programming.
Experience with cloud computing.
Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) approaches to data analysis.
Experience using and/or deploying database systems.
Experience with parallel and/or distributed computational workflows or data processing pipelines.
Experience working in cross-functional teams.
Additional Desired Qualifications for Computer Systems Engineer III:
Experience acting as a software project manager or software developer line manager.
Experience leading cross-functional teams.
This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
This position will be hired at a level commensurate (CSE II or CSEIII) with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
