The Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of Southern California's major research institutions. The department has 60 tenure/tenure-track faculty, 300 undergraduate students, more than 1200 masterâs students, and more than 300 Ph.D. students. In the 2020 school year, research expenditures in the department exceeded $30M in direct costs. The department has received 4 Shannon Awards, 16 members of the National Academy of Engineering, and 39 recipients of the NSF Early Career Award.
EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS OF POSITION
The computing infrastructure engineer will focus on the departmentâs growing computing infrastructure with varied hardware and software demands. They will support the computing needs for both the academic and research mission of the department. As such the engineer will perform the necessary tasks to configure, design and maintain computing systems within the department. Some of the exemplary tasks include:
(1) Maintain computer servers, including hardware installation, software installation, network and power delivery cabling.Â (2) Install regular software security and other OS updates, manage software compatability. (3) Keep up with research and product progressÂ in server design and provide feedback to faculty and students on identifying the right server and other peripheral designs for a given research or teaching task.(4) Support research and teaching needs of the department, such as helping set up course virtual machines for students, install lab-specific software, and hardware instrumentation tools for research. (5) Support industry and government sponsor visits to showcase our computing capabilities
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
Minimum Field of Expertise:
Intermediate understanding of and experience with systems administration, backups, operating systems programming languages and associated hardware platforms.
Preferred Education and Experience
Masterâs Degree Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science (Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education)
2+ years of professional experience in the technical areas listed above.
