The Department of Wood Science Engineering invites applications for a full time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, tenure track Assistant Professor appointment that consists of a balance of instruction/teaching, research/scholarship, and service responsibilities, and is expected to begin as soon as March 16, 2022 and as late as September 16, 2022.
The faculty member can supplement the salary during the summer through opportunities related to the position duties (e.g., grants, summer teaching (study abroad), contract testing, and consulting). The new faculty member will have many opportunities to shape, expand, and diversify the WSE Department's reputation for excellence in research, undergraduate and graduate (masters and doctoral) instruction, as well as institutional and professional service. The new faculty member will be responsible for delivering quality instruction within undergraduate and graduate programs of the Department. The faculty member will be expected to develop a program of distinction in research and scholarship within the broad area of advanced manufacturing, and contribute to the interdisciplinary nature of the WSE Department's mission to discover the science, engage the technology, and design the renewable products, materials & structures for the next generation. The incumbent will provide technical assistance and training to stakeholders. In addition, the incumbent will participate annually in departmental, college, and university level affairs and governance. Service is also expected in support of industry, academic organizations, and other professional groups and associations.
The successful candidate need not have any background in wood science, although knowledge of recent developments in the field of advanced wood products is preferred. The candidate is expected to actively engage with the TallWood Design Institute (http://tallwoodinstitute.org/), which is a collaboration between OSU's Colleges of Forestry and Engineering and University of Oregon's College of Design that unites faculty across disciplines and partners with industry to advance research and educational opportunities in timber manufacturing, design, and construction. The candidate is expected to develop a teaching and research program in advanced wood manufacturing, collaborating with Wood Science and Engineering as well as Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing colleagues and is will seek adjunct faculty status in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering.
Typically requires PhD or terminal degree (Masters for some Extension positions and MLS for Library positions), demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom Extension, or other setting, and develop a research program in the academic discipline/unit.
An earned PhD by the time of hire focusing on Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering, Wood Science, Data Science, Computer Science or a closely related field; OR a PhD in another field, plus BOTH a BS or MS degree AND work experience in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering, Wood Science, or closely related field.
Ability to teach courses on advanced wood product manufacturing technologies covering topics such as robotics, automation, scanning, optimization, Big Data, Internet of Things, digital fabrication and additive manufacturing. Demonstrated commitment to student success.
Demonstrated potential to conduct effective advanced wood manufacturing research.
Demonstrated potential to publish in outlets such as refereed journals, books, and/or book chapters.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) enabling collaboration with a broad spectrum of students, teachers, researchers, and industrial professionals.
Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
