Social media has transformed politics around the world and the way we receive and engage with information. NYU's Center for Social Media and Politics (CSMaP) hosts a global community of scholars to study the impact of this transformation. Our rigorous, policy-relevant research harnesses social media data to study politics in new ways and explores how social media affects public opinion and political behavior. Through innovative research, teaching, and outreach, CSMaP aims to advance scientific knowledge and inform public policy and discourse in the digital age.
We are looking for a Research Operations Director (Researcher) to help direct the Center's research portfolio, which currently includes 50+ projects across diverse substantive and methodological areas. This position is responsible for working with our research community of faculty, postdocs, engineers, students, and staff to manage the center's research operations. You will balance strategic insight with operational execution; you will not only identify and strategize new research processes and systems, but will also support each research project towards completion. Since you will support research from ideation through publication, you will need to have or quickly develop a thorough understanding of our research; as a result, comfort with empirical / computational scholarship is a must.
Responsibilities will include project planning and coordination for complex research; research implementation (including fielding surveys, developing research plans, and scoping and executing social media data purchases); managing and recommending research priorities for the leadership team; ensuring cross-center communication; overseeing on- and off-boarding; and supporting a positive and inclusive culture. You will also be responsible for directly overseeing a team of two research coordinators — a full-time project manager and part-time project associate — with possible team growth in the coming year(s).
To this end, we are looking for an analytical and people-focused leader; a problem solver with a high tolerance for ambiguity; and a self-starter who is willing to tackle problems both large and small. We are open to all academic and professional backgrounds, though a demonstrated understanding of academic research is key.
The directors of the Center for Social Media and Politics actively encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply. We believe in the importance of diversity as a key to the long-range health and vibrancy of the field, as well as its ability to create a more stimulating intellectual environment.
Required education: Bachelors of Arts or Science in related field, such as a social science or data science
Required experience: 3+ years in an academic setting, public or private technology-related organization, or research institute.
The ability to manage complex research projects with competing priorities
The ability to successfully manage a variety of matrixed relationships, including delegating and reviewing the work of staff who are not direct reports
Comfort influencing and working through ambiguity on horizontal teams and with limited direction
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Experience creating and / or using research project tracking systems
Experience putting together and executing strategic plans
Excellent verbal and written communication
Ability to forge and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including social media companies, civil society organizations, and other academic groups
Preferred education: Masters of Arts or Science in related field, such as a social science or data science research
Additional preferred experience:
5+ years operating in a leadership role in an academic setting, public or private sector technology-related organization, or research institute
Experience in social science research, survey research, and/or data science
To apply, please upload your resume. We also offer the option to upload a short cover letter explaining why you're interested in CSMaP and anything else you'd like us to know. Feel free to contact us at email@example.com with question.
