The Staff Engineer II will work in the cleanroom of the Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) at Vanderbilt University. The Staff Engineer II will play a critical role in VINSE's efforts to support research across a broad range of technical disciplines and interests. The Staff Engineer II will also support education and outreach activities in the VINSE facilities. Reporting directly to the cleanroom manager, the Staff Engineer II will work closely with the director, deputy director, and technical staff.
VINSE operations occupy cleanroom and advanced imaging facilities on the main and basement levels, respectively, of Vanderbilt University's 230,000 sqft Engineering and Science Building (ESB), which opened in 2017. VINSE facilities are focal points at the ESB with the cleanroom totaling approximately 10,000 total sqft of floor space. VINSE is recruiting a cleanroom-focused process engineer. The ideal candidate will possess a relevant science or engineering background supported by strong communication, teamwork, personal management, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will play a critical role in VINSE's efforts to support research across a broad range of technical disciplines and interests. The candidate will also contribute to undergraduate educational activities and science outreach activities that take place in the VINSE core facilities. This person must have a strong technical background to meet the following performance expectations with minimal oversight:
Develop and improve processes and capabilities of interest to the VINSE research community and ensure appropriate documentation is created and updated.
Work with other VINSE staff members to maintain VINSE facilities and support infrastructure, including providing and/or coordinating preventive maintenance and repairs of equipment.
Assist VINSE users with research activities, including troubleshooting problems and assisting with the development of unique processing capabilities.
Actively involved in the development and implementation of cleanroom procedures along with ensuring the facility complies with all health and safety standards.
Proactively work with researchers to ensure a positive and productive experience in VINSE facilities.
Help specify and install new equipment, as well as develop associated processes and procedures that expand VINSE's technical capabilities.
Train users on cleanroom processes and equipment.

BS, MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related discipline.
Previous cleanroom experience is required .
Expertise in one or more of the following areas is required : Thermal evaporation, sputtering, and electron-beam deposition of thin films; plasma-enhanced CVD (PECVD); atomic layer deposition (ALD); reactive ion etching (RIE); wet chemical etching and cleaning; photolithography; soft lithography techniques; and electron-beam lithography .
