Detailed Job Description As a core member of the GIS dedicated research team, this position will support an engineering team on various applied research and technical programs. The person in this position will leverage experience in hands-on fabrication, tear-down, and maintenance to assist in development of fixtures, prototype components, demonstration systems, and test setups. Our typical fabrication efforts include prototype machining, welding, and operating additive manufacturing equipment. Depending on experience, this position will also include working with metrology equipment such as optical microscope, SEM, surface plates, gage pins, and other quality related tools for inspecting defects. Interest and ability in wide variety of assignments and ability to learn on the job are critical to the position. The major responsibilities of this job are:
Work with engineers to build custom fixtures, including fabricating components on vertical mills and lathes
Identify job-shops and obtain quotes for components to be fabricated
Operate, troubleshoot, and perform preventative maintenance on equipment
Provide guidance and basic training to co-op employees (students), reviewing set-ups and observation; typically during repetitive machining tasks, such as making tensile specimens
Critical thinking and application of problem solving skills relating to breakdown and repair of test fixtures and component failures
Be flexible and creative to solve unique challenges - no two requests are the same
Execute experimental test programs
Prepare and inspect test specimens
Assembly, and general fabrication and welding
Identify job-shops and obtain quotes for components that will not be fabricated in house
Provide guidance and basic training to co-op employees

The Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) is a leading sustainability research and education organization at Rochester Institute of Technology. Required Minimum Qualifications This position requires a high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED), but with 10 years experience in a hands-on fabrication/prototype or laboratory environment. Specialized Skills required:
Extensive experience with vertical mills and lathes, preferably in a prototype machining environment
Experience interacting with outside vendors
Strong collaboration, teamwork, communication, problem solving, and critical thinking skills
Self-motivated, with interest in learning new skills (welding, 3D printing, additive repair processes)
Strong organizational skills and house-keeping ethic (all work areas need to be kept clean when not in use, as they receive regular tours)
Understanding of the various types of cutting processes and when to use them (EDM, Laser, Waterjet Plasma, etc.)
Understanding of manufacturing quality and metrology
Competence with basic computer skills (Word, Excel, e-mail)
Preferred experience, skills:
Experience with programming 2 or 3-axis CNC milling equipment, including creating toolpaths with CAM software
Welding with MIG or TIG
Folded sheet metal fabrication
Operating 3D printing equipment, plastic or metal
Grinding and polishing processes
Creating CAD models and drawings (Solidworks)
Practical exposure to basic electrical wiring
Practical exposure to machine repair
Interest or experience in basic automotive repair
Experience with cleaning technologies (abrasive blasting, ultrasonics, etc.)
Metrology equipment and quality related tasks
