The UC Irvine Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Samueli School of Engineering is currently accepting applications for a postdoctoral scholar in the area of computational neuroscience and signal processing in the Laboratory of Computational and Translational Neuroscience, under the direction of Assistant Professor Beth Lopour.
The successful applicant will primarily contribute to an NIH-funded project examining electrophysiological biomarkers of refractory epilepsy in patients undergoing neurosurgical management. The postdoctoral scholar will collect and analyze large datasets of human intracranial electroencephalogram (EEG), and develop novel computational methods and models to discover and validate EEG biomarkers of epilepsy. The work will be done in collaboration with epilepsy specialists at the Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) with opportunities for co-mentorship by clinician scientists. The appointment will be full-time for a one-year period. Renewal of the contract will be contingent on the availability of adequate funding and performance.
Note that the University of California limits the total duration of an individual's postdoctoral service to five years, including postdoctoral service at other institutions.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and years of experience.
Requirements: Ph.D. in biomedical engineering or other relevant field, e.g., applied math, electrical engineering, or physics, is required. Prior experience with data analysis, particularly signal processing of time series data, and fluency in at least one programming language (with a preference for MATLAB) is preferred. Experience with EEG data analysis, familiarity with machine learning techniques, good written and oral communication skills, and experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary team are also desirable. Candidates with an advanced medical degree, e.g. M.D. / Ph.D. candidates, will be strongly considered.
