Be part of a distributed team developing innovative intelligent fisheries monitoring systems. Coordinate the advancement and implementation of automation of a suite of monitoring tools to provide automation in real time specifically designed to estimate total catch. Assist with advancement and development of real-time systems for automated catch event detection, haul characteristics (catch versus by-catch), fish length measurement, and species identification. Design and develop system functionality and hardware for several intelligent fisheries monitoring systems (IMS) systems by building on previous NOAA Fisheries advancements of both non-camera and camera-based systems, methods, and tools.
**Extended periods of travel to NOAA's Pascagoula MS fisheries lab is likely.
* Coordinate with NOAA NMFS and NOAA OMAO to place hardware on board ships to test systems. * In collaboration with others, review hardware and software image collection systems currently used in the industry. * In collaboration with others, develop a hardware system for capturing bycatch images using cameras in a high quality, reliable and scientific manner to augment the training of evolving AI/ML systems; others will focus on the AI/ML software. * Provide engineering specifications and contract building of toolkit for field testing. * In collaboration with others, compile, write, and publish technical engineering documentation to guide future Electronic Monitoring (EM) providers and researchers for development and deployment of future monitoring systems that integrate real time automation, including an operation manual. * After reviewing the NOAA provided hardware and software eLog device currently used for remote effort estimation in the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery, assist in the development of advanced sensing unit incorporating advanced sensors such as accelerometers to automatically determine haul activity. Develop several units for future field testing. * In collaboration with others, review NOAA provided hardware and software system to improve optical and hardware performance * In collaboration with others, test new advanced polarizing, infrared, other camera properties integrated with system. * In collaboration with others, test alternative hardware configurations to improve parallel processing capabilities. * Assist with dissemination of results in archival literature via journals and conferences. * Assist with dissemination of results via oral presentations at conferences and local meetings. * Other duties as assigned
* Appointment to this position requires a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field. * In-depth knowledge of computing systems * Good working ability with C++ and GitHub
Research Engineer I - B.S in engineering or computer science; less than one-year experience in a related area
Research Engineer II - B.S. in engineering or computer science; two years of professional experience in a related area; requires two years at previous level or equivalent
Research Engineer III - B.S. in engineering or computer science; four years of professional experience in a related area; requires two years at previous level or equivalent.
Senior Research Engineer - B.S. in engineering or computer science; six years of professional experience in a related area; requires two years at previous level or equivalent.
