The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at the University of Washington. A core research area for IHME is the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors enterprise (GBD). A systematic, scientific effort to quantify the comparative magnitude of health loss due to diseases, injuries, and risk factors by age, sex, and geography over time, GBD is the largest and most comprehensive effort to date to measure epidemiological levels and trends worldwide. GBD’s aim is to provide policymakers, donors, and researchers with the highest-quality quantitative evidence base to make decisions that achieve better health.
IHME has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Principal Software Engineer to join the Central Computation Team in support of IHME's GBD project. The Principal Software Engineer on the Central Computation team will be the lead engineer for the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), working with other senior management and engineers across all sub-teams of Science and Engineering at IHME. We are looking for an individual to lead the engineering strategy to build a modern, reproducible, data-driven research infrastructure and supporting analytical software tools for the GBD that can easily be utilized by other staff with less coding experience.
The Principal Software Engineer will navigate the complexity of GBD content and infrastructure to prioritize engineering projects. The person in this position will assess the overall architecture of GBD modeling software, and design system-level plans and comprehensive solutions for future projects, and identify and resolve technical debt.
The position directly contributes to the ability of the institute to meet deadlines and support IHME's research aims by designing and leading a team in implementing appropriate technical solutions to research problems. This position directly contributes to cutting-edge analysis that establishes IHME's credibility and high bar of excellence in the field of population health metrics and evaluation.
This position will be deeply involved in developing IHME's talent pool so that we continue to meet IHME's mission on providing the most policy relevant data to the globe to help improve health. This position may additionally work alongside other teams on complementary projects and will require knowledge and skill sharing and collective problem-solving. Overall, the Principal Software Engineer will be a critical member of an agile, dynamic research team.

Software development and architecture
Develop plans, design architecture,?and set standards for?the implementation of software solutions to turn experimental research methods into a production-ready code base.
Lead the redesign and refactor of existing code to improve efficiency, operability, and performance while maintaining high-quality results.
Direct the design and implementation of tools to optimize efficiency across a massive computing cluster to enable researchers to quickly produce results.
Enforce and assure the quality of IHME software products through continuous integration, automated unit testing, code versioning, and code coverage tools.
Leadership and management
Supervise/manage a team of engineers and serve as lead engineer to include: hiring and training, managing workflow and guiding priority setting, career development guidance, performance management, coaching, mentoring and disciplinary actions.
Contribute to a positive team environment by actively promoting a positive, respectful work environment?
Actively engage team members and create learning experiences?
Devise new approaches, strategies, and the application of new technologies??
Advise functional and technology leaders in defining priorities, key initiatives, and organizational alignment
Ensure strong, clear, and consistent communication across stakeholders and teams
Lead development of multiple analytic tools or engineering areas
Exhibit command of the dimensions and uses of health data in IHME analytic pipelines.
Understand the main operational underpinnings and goals of IHME’s major programs of work and how those directly relate to key production tools, analytic machinery, data, and diagnostics.
Work with researchers to find novel solutions to existing analytic questions, researching and incorporating new technologies as required.

Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, statistics, or related field plus ten years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams in application development project from conception through to implementation
Significant expertise in developing code in Python, Java, R, and/or other coding language.
Extensive experience with engineering best practices including continuous integration, automated testing, and containerization.
Consistently demonstrates extremely high levels of technical knowledge, ingenuity and creativity.?

Applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, and regression

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Office is located in Seattle, Washington. This position is eligible to work fully remote; work schedule required to overlap 50% of IHME Office hours between 8am - 6pm Pacific Time.
This position is open to those with UW Work authorization; H1B visa sponsorship is not available.
Evening and weekend work sometimes required to meet publication deadlines and grant deliverables.
The position may be required to be on-call to resolve user problems outside of regular business hours.
