The position is responsible for providing creative solutions to a wide range of technical problems in the areas of ultrafast laser products. In a team environment, engineers focus on product development with the expectation to work with limited guidance on complex engineering activities in a fast paced environment and to simultaneously handle multiple projects. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations.
Essential Job Functionsinclude the following, but are not limited to:
Develops and tests advanced Fiber Optics including coupling, collimation, connectorization, splicing, and testing
Documents project work and, at times, may lead projects and technical discussions
Works with manufacturing on prototype units
Develops, monitors and maintains product development schedules
Creates specifications and technical documentation as well as technical reports to recommend solutions to complex technical problems
May write and develop effective presentations for training or developing and incorporating solutions in line with changing technologies
May be asked to install systems at customer locations and provide product training when needed
Complies with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas
Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar position preferred.
Minimum 1 years of demonstrated hands-on the fields of Fiber Optics and/or Photonics with hands-on lab experience is preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or a related engineering disciplines or equivalent
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of current optical design, fabrication, assembly, and test techniques
Experience with Optomechanics, ability to engineer mechanical systems to work with Fiber Optics and Optics
Working knowledge of 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks
Familiarity with Zemax Modeling Software is a plus
Prototyping experience a plus
Strong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skills
Proficient computer skills is a must
Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards
Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing production priorities
