The Department of Genetics at Stanford University has an excellent opportunity for a motivated scientist that is interested in big data management and wrangling. The desired candidate will have a strong attention to detail, an education in molecular biology or genetics, and the ability to acquire and review information quickly. In this position you will work as a junior member on a team of professionals including Ph.D. biologists and software engineers at the data coordination center of the ENCODE project. ENCODE is funded by the National Institute of Health to create a catalog of all the functional elements in the human genome, subsequently making it available to scientists worldwide for the study of human health and disease. You will serve as the primary liaison with international research laboratories to facilitate the acquisition of the high-throughput data produced by these labs and will be responsible for data modeling and curation.
A strong candidate will have deep knowledge of high-throughput experimental methodologies, large genomic datasets, and their computational analysis in order to successfully describe these types of data. Prior laboratory experience generating genomic datasets and/or bioinformatics analysis experience to identify RNA transcripts, transcription factor binding sites, histone modifications, epigenomics and SNPs within genomic datasets is desired. Familiarity with the use of controlled vocabularies and ontologies to described biological concepts is a plus. In this position you will be responsible for working with the software engineering, literature curation, and bioinformatics staff in the specification, design, and implementation of tools that integrate, search, and display experimental data.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential in order to provide instruction and feedback to members of the scientific community in order to facilitate the acquisition and description of high-throughput data, to effectively provide documentation and specifications to co-workers during tool development, and to contribute to FAQs, tutorials, and publications.

Leland and Jane Stanford founded the University to "promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization." Stanford opened its doors in 1891, and more than a century later, it remains dedicated to finding solutions to the great challenges of the day and to preparing students for leadership in a complex world. The University's thriving diverse community is comprised of nearly 7000 undergraduate students, 12000 graduate students, 2000 faculty members, 1900 postdoctoral scholars, and over 11,000 academic and administrative staff in seven schools including several interdisciplinary research centers and institutes. The campus spreads over 8000 contiguous acres and nearly all undergraduates live on campus. Stanford offers bachelor's and master's degrees in addition to doctoral degrees (PhD, MD, DMA and JD) plus a number of professional and continuing education programs and certifications.
