Detailed Job Description GIS/CIMS is looking for an engineer or scientist with strong leadership skills, experimental and analytical materials background, and a passion for solving real-world problems. In our environment, researchers work on a wide variety of products and technologies, work with undergraduate and graduate students, and are engaged in collaborative research with leading companies on projects in technical areas such as: advanced manufacturing and remanufacturing, recycling, energy generation and storage systems, sustainable transportation, and prognostics.
The employee will be a core team member supporting an upcoming project to explore the use of ultrasonic surface modification as part of an improved remanufacturing process for hardened steels.
Responsibilities include: Support existing research projects focused on sustainable manufacturing, repair, and remanufacturing of structural metallic components, with focus on: surface modification, additive manufacturing, and condition assessment / non-destructive evaluation
Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure all tasks and procedures are completed on time and within budget. Effectively plan for long lead-time activities.
Perform lab-scale experiments to demonstrate feasibility
Apply design of experiments to guide process optimization
Develop strategies for scale-up and implementation to real-world applications
Effectively communicate results, analysis, challenges, and next steps
Prepare and present/publish technical results of research
Perform/manage materials analysis, for both internal and external customers, to support product failure analysis and industrial process quality improvement
Develop proposals for external funding related to sustainable manufacturing and life-cycle extension, with a focus on: remanufacturing, process material and energy efficiency, condition assessment and prognostics, and additive manufacturing
Provide materials expertise to support sustainable product design efforts
Specialized skills required:
Demonstrated ability to conduct applied research, including: development of test plans (design of experiments), data acquisition and analysis, resource and budget planning, and documentation of progress
Significant experience in metals and metallurgy (including microstructure analysis), with flexibility to work on diverse materials, technical challenges, and application domains
Experience in analysis of materials and material failures
Exceptional technical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently or as part of a team
Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills

Required Minimum Qualifications The successful candidate will have a BS in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or related field. A minimum of 3 years of materials, mechanical, or other related engineering experience.
GIS is seeking a proven candidate with above average skills who has a demonstrated track record in their chosen area of materials, and interest to learn and grow with others.
Preferred skills/experience include:
PhD or MS in Materials Science or Mechanical Engineer or related field
Experience applying and/or characterizing residual stresses to improve fatigue performance of carbon and low alloy steels
Experience with the application of additive materials to repair/remanufacturing of structural metallic components
Demonstrated ability to publish results in peer-reviewed technical publications/journals
Experience developing and transferring processes from the laboratory to production-relevant environment
Firm grasp of engineering concepts, and experience designing mechanical systems
Understanding of, or experience with, technologies for remanufacturing and/or recycling
