The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks a talented, creative and enthusiastic individual to contribute to the design, development and translation of assistive technologies as part of a new initiative at Harvard. Reporting to Assistive Technologies Initiative leadership, the Staff Electrical and Embedded Systems Engineer will work with a team of engineers, researchers, designers, and clinicians to drive the innovation, evolution, and maintenance of a broad set of electrical and embedded software systems. Their work will enable the Initiative's research, product development, and technology translation efforts. The role will involve collaborative projects across different research groups within Harvard and other premier academic and clinical partner institutions that focus on high-risk, fundamental research and science-driven technology development. Note: This is a two-year term position with the possibility of renewal. ● Manage research and development efforts related to embedded systems and contribute to software (C/C++ and Python) development across common low-power microprocessor families (PIC, ARM, etc.). ● Collaborate with researchers on the implementation of real-time signal processing and control algorithms using various sensors and actuators. ● Utilize an in-depth knowledge of motor driver programming and motor control to develop, optimize, and debug wearable robotic systems. ● Review and maintain electrical hardware design (understand schematics, probe signals, and debug embedded systems) as part of ongoing system development, support, and optimization efforts. ● Contribute to key component selection for custom circuits in collaboration with project team members and outside vendors. ● Mentor staff, researchers, and students, providing leadership and expertise in the field of embedded systems and electrical engineering. ● Contribute to the testing of electromechanical system performance on bench top models and on human subjects. ● Collect feedback and identify necessary metrics to measure and optimize various system parameters against functional requirements. ● Contribute in the preparation of demonstration prototypes, internal reports, patent applications, and presentations. ● As appropriate, contribute to assistive technology initiative projects across different research groups within Harvard and other premier academic and clinical partner institutions that focus on high-risk, fundamental research and science-driven technology development. Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent. Minimum 5 years of experience in research and/or product development. Advanced education may count toward experience. ● M.S. or PhD in a related field is a plus ● 8+ years of experience preferred ● Extensive experience with RTOS and embedded systems with hard real-time requirements. ● Knowledge and experience selecting and programming microprocessors, controllers, and logic arrays ● Strong organizational skills, creativity, motivation, and communication (oral and written) ability. ● Proficiency in computer programming and familiarity with electrical design/simulation software (e.g. C/C++, Python, Altium, PSpice, AutoCad Electrical, Matlab,) ● Experience with communication protocols like SPI, I2C, CAN, UART and USB ● Experience using Linux RT is a plus ● Knowledge of software development in Linux environments is a plus ● Hands-on experience in prototyping, soldering, and debugging designs ● Experience with computer-based instrumentation and data acquisition ● Familiarity with electrical safety compliance and testing, including IEC 60601 is a plus. ● Knowledge and experience working with manufacturing sources and component vendors is a plus ● Able to translate stakeholder input (e.g. from clinical partners, technical team, end users, and industry representatives) into high level and low level system requirements EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER: We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. |
