The mission of the Center for Advancing STEM Teaching, Learning, and Evaluation (CASTLE)a leading innovator in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics educational practices and researchis to improve science and math education and outreach initiatives by fostering collaboration between science and math educators and researchers.

CASTLE encompasses myriad STEM Education initiatives at RIT including:
  • RIT HHMI Inclusive Excellence: strengthened inclusion in STEM education from a multicultural base of faculty, staff, and students in the College of Science
  • Summer Math Applications in Science with Hands-On (SMASH) Experience: designed to increase the engagement of middle-school girls in STEM
  • RIT Learning Assistant (LA) program: geared toward student interaction and engagement in collaborative problem solving
  • Professional Development for Emerging Education Researchers (PEER): created to increase the scholarship and teaching effectiveness of junior faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and senior faculty

Detailed Job Description
CASTLE seeks a Senior Staff Specialist in primary support of the Center's Accounting function. The Senior Staff Specialist is responsible for executing accounting transactions, preparing financial reports and forecasts, and performing financial account reconciliation to ensure adherence to internal RIT policy and diverse external funding requirements. In addition, the Senior Staff Specialist will provide operational administrative support to the Center and its programs as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Establish internal controls and guidelines for accounting transactions and budget preparation
  • Meet with Principal Investigators to perform monthly budget reconciliations through Oracle reports, budget reports, and budget projections
  • Perform financial administration for multiple special project and discretionary accounts to ensure that proper documentation is submitted for expenditures in compliance with grant regulations
  • Collaborate with Sponsored Programs Accounting staff to successfully handle the post-award financial administration of contracts and grants
  • Process travel and expense reimbursement requests
  • Compile and enter adjusting journal entries for internal purchases and external vendor contracts
  • Prepare and examine Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards
  • Review accounts for discrepancies and reconcile differences
  • Establish tables of accounts and assign entries to proper accounts
  • Analyze CASTLE operations, trends, costs, revenues, and financial commitments to project future revenues and expenses
  • Develop, implement, modify, and document record keeping and accounting systems
  • Advise CASTLE leadership regarding issues such as resource utilization and the assumptions underlying budget forecasts.
  • Prepare and process invoice and stipend payment forms, ProCard transactions, and independent contractor forms
  • Respond to accounting and administrative questions with resolutions
  • Coordinate and schedule travel, meetings, and appointments
  • Other responsibilities as assigned


Required Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Associates Degree in Accounting or related discipline
  • Significant professional experience in Accounting, Administrative Management, or closely related discipline
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skillset
  • Process-orientation with the ability to think strategically and recommend process improvements
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of accounting principles on budgets and audits with the ability to interpret and meet funding reporting requirements
  • High level of sound judgment with the ability to make independent decisions

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or closely related discipline from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
  • Significant professional experience in Accounting within Higher Education
