Detailed Job Description Purpose and Scope of the Job The purpose of the Research Administrator position is to facilitate the development, organization, and submission of proposals for external research funding for academic units as assigned. The scope of the position includes working closely with researchers on all aspects of proposal development, from matching faculty expertise with funding opportunities to proposal submission, and the Research Administrator is directly responsible for budgetary and administrative compliance on proposals.
The Research Administrator will assist faculty in obtaining external grants and contracts to support RIT's growth as a student-centered research university as described in the Institute strategic plan. This involves developing a close working relationship with faculty and staff at RIT. Outside of RIT, the Research Administrator will develop deep knowledge of funding agencies and sponsors, particularly those that support basic scientific research and STEM education, and maintain positive working relationships with them. The Research Administrator reports to the Director of Sponsored Research Services.

Provide guidance and support to faculty and staff in the development of proposals for sponsored activities, including:
Identification and dissemination of information about funding opportunities, and developing administrative expertise in federal funding agencies such agencies as the National Science Foundation; National Institutes of Health; NASA; federal departments of Defense, Education, Energy, and Transportation; as well as New York State agencies, foundations, and other organizations supporting research;
Working with investigators to match expertise and fundable ideas with potential sponsors;
Assist in the formation and facilitation of teams of RIT faculty/staff and external partners to develop collaborative projects;
Understand and interpret sponsor requests for proposals and other guidance for proposal development and submission;
Develop checklists and other organizational tools to ensure complete proposal packages;
Guide faculty through RIT internal and sponsors compliance requirements;
Create budgets in agency-specific formats that are fully compliant with sponsor and RIT rules and regulations;
Manage electronic research administration functions related to proposal development, including proposal submission and sponsor liaison;
Review proposals to ensure compliance with RIT policies, sponsor guidelines, and overall excellence in all proposal components;
Act as authorizing official for research proposals, often above $1 million
Maintain organized electronic documentation of communication and decisions related to proposal submission;
Participate in relevant training and education activities;
Other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications Qualifications
Bachelors or Equivalent Experience
1-2 years higher education or related experience
Strong reading, writing, computing, and interpersonal communication skills
Prior research administration experience and proposal development experience
Experience with federal funding agencies
