Department/College Description
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) invites interested applicants for the position of Assistant Director for TRiO Upward Bound in the Division for Diversity & Inclusion. We are looking for a dynamic team member who has a passion for working with students. This is a grant funded position at 40 hours per week that requires travel to the schools, as well as some nights and weekends based on programs/events.


Detailed Job Description
The Assistant Director serves primarily as a case manager for TRiO Upward Bound (UB) students by monitoring and supporting the academic progress of eligible TRiO students enrolled at one of the target schools. Assists the Director with assessment initiatives, serves as the staff lead with expertise on Financial Aid / financial literacy issues, maintains databases, and prepares appropriate reports

Administrative Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for managing one or more academic support services functions and for formulating and recommending policies and procedures to effectively administer such programs.
  • Responsible for interpreting academic support services policies and procedures and for recommending new and improved programs to effectively manage academic support services administration.
  • Maintains appropriate and accurate student records.
  • Tracks and documents student participation in project services.
  • Analyzes data, generates and disseminates periodic reports (monthly and semester).
  • Assists in developing and implementing advising unit goals and strategies.

    Program and Curriculum Development:
  • Develops and facilitates program workshops and coordinates social and cultural events as needed.
  • Develop and monitor students' Individual Academic Plans (IAP)
  • Provide required and selected permissible services for the targeted population in the areas of academic, career, and personal advising and coaching.
  • Tracks UB students' academic advising and participation requirements as outlined in the UB student agreement form.
  • Assist participants with course selection to meet graduation requirements
    Other duties as assigned.


    Required Minimum Qualifications
    Successful candidate must have
    • Bachelors Degree in education, administration, counselor education, business, social work, public administration or a related field.
    • A minimum two years of experience working with students in the 6-12 school system desired
    • Teaching or academic coaching experience
    • Experience designing curriculum and delivering workshops desired
    • Experience working with low-income or first-generation populations, working in program development/management and experience working in TRiO or similar projects is desired
    • Excellent written and verbal skills

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
    • Ability to assess student needs, value a high degree of student contact, and interact interpersonally and effectively with diverse individuals.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently perform duties and responsibilities with attention to detail and support for organizational policies, as well as the ability to anticipate demands/pressures of assignments and adjust accordingly
    • Professional maturity that will foster a professional mentoring and advising relationship with students
    • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and as part of a team.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Demonstrate initiative and good judgment
    • Able to maintain confidentiality and proper discretion in all interactions
    PLEASE NOTE: The individual hired for this position will be required to have a pre-employment Motor Vehicle check, and the Motor Vehicle Report must clear RIT's Safe Driving Policy (please refer to page 4)
