Berkeley Lab's Nuclear Science (NS) Division is looking for a Senior Scientific Engineering Associate to join their Applied Nuclear Physics Program!
In this role, you will engage in innovative applied research and development with a diverse group of scientists and engineers across the Lab to collaborate on the development of networked gamma-ray detection and imaging systems. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of models and algorithms for networks of static detectors in urban environments and networks of UAS-borne detectors.
What You Will Do:
Apply technical expertise, knowledge of advanced scientific concepts and practices, to provide technical support for the investigation and development of new analysis methodologies and algorithms for radiation detection and mapping with distributed sensor systems.
Participate in the development and integration of multi-sensor systems including managing software installation and dependencies, experimental testing and evaluation, and system design and refinement.
Develop, implement, and optimize advanced data analysis methods including multi-sensor data fusion, implementation and optimization of machine learning tools for novel applications, and optimization for either real-time or large-scale offline processing.
Perform research and development following best practices, ensuring reproducible and well documented results.
What Is Required:
Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related discipline and a minimum of 3 years of related technical experience in radiation detection and gamma-ray or neutron imaging or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience of algorithm development, signal processing, or statistical analysis.
Experience developing and employing machine learning algorithms.
Experience with the management of software in a Linux ecosystem.
Demonstrated data analysis skills in C/C++ and Python.
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively work with staff at all levels.
What We Prefer:
Advanced Degree in Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
Experience with machine learning.

This is a full time, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for a maximum of 5 years total or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
