USC Provost IT is seeking a Systems Administrator to join our growing team. This position will be a key member of an innovative and customer-focused department responsible for creating and maintaining modern IT systems, technologies, infrastructure, and applications. It will have the opportunity to work on virtual server infrastructure, security tools, networks, and cloud platforms to support projects that have a University-wide impact.
You will provide essential day-to-day support of servers, networks, software and overall IT infrastructure for the executive offices of the University, including the Office of the Provost and President, Human Resources, Equity & Compliance, Student Affairs, and numerous other departments, offices, and divisions. You will work with team members to manage, troubleshoot, and grow a mixed but primarily Microsoft-based, multi-site environment comprising of database, web, file, virtualization, and application servers, as well as various other technologies. You will also help administer firewalls and other advanced security tools to make sure data and systems stay safe and protected.
In this position, you will work with other team members to set up new cloud and virtual infrastructure as part of technology projects, frequently collaborating with developers, technical staff, and clients/end-users. You will also respond to systems alerts and use monitoring systems to proactively prevent infrastructure issues and ensure optimal systems performance. You will also work with a diverse set of clients across several academic and business units at USC and may also act as a point-of-escalation for unusually complex issues encountered by end-users.

USC Provost IT is the information technology services department of the USC Office of the Provost. We provide various IT services, including infrastructure and application services, technical support, and software engineering and cloud applications, to over seventy University divisions, departments, and offices. Bachelorâs degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Minimum of two years of experience with systems administration/engineering tasks and duties, including operating system internals, server hardware platforms, and backup systems
Experience with Windows Server infrastructure and technologies
Experience with VMware vSphere virtualization software
Experience with managing security systems and controls, such as firewalls or access control lists (ACLs)
Typically possesses some experience with networking technologies or concepts, including with IP subnets and network troubleshooting
Typically possesses knowledge of enterprise monitoring and configuration management tools such as Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager or System Center Operations Manager
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong troubleshooting/debugging skills and a desire to see a problem through to its resolution
Ability and willingness to work on-call hours as needed, including evenings and/or weekends
Ability to work with a wide variety of technical and managerial staff to solve complex problems
Demonstrated commitment to constantly improve existing processes and implement new ones where necessary
Demonstrated strong personal ethics, including the ability to properly handle confidential information
Demonstrated engagement in continuous learning and the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and software
Three years of experience with systems administration, backups, operating systems programming languages and associated hardware platforms
Ability to coordinate multiple projects and adjust to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment
Experience with PowerShell, Python, or a similar automation language, and a desire to use these technologies to automate routine systems-related tasks
Experience with enterprise network technologies and protocols, including router or switch configurations and IP network troubleshooting
Experience with underlying server security practices, principles, and technologies, including server hardening, network security, and protections steps and methods against common attack vectors
Knowledge of enterprise storage technologies and systems, including storage arrays, RAID, iSCSI, and file sharing systems and configurations
Experience with cloud platforms and technologies, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform
Experience providing direct support to executive management
Customer service experience within an IT department
Leads, maintains, and administers computer networks and related computing environments, including computer hardware, systems software, applications software, and all configurations
Monitors systems, servers and auxiliary devices for performance and security. Determines whether adjustments need to be made and confers with technical support staff and vendors as appropriate. Identifies changes that need to be made in the future
Troubleshoots and identifies hardware and software problems in a timely manner; resolves routine problems, replaces defective components, and researches resources to identify solutions. Refers more complex problems to appropriate staff for resolution
Installs, tests, implements, and assists users with the implementation of new hardware, software, and applications
Performs data backups and disaster recovery operations. Repairs and/or recovers systems.
Designs, configures, and tests computer hardware, networking software and operating system software
Assigns, modifies, and deletes user accounts and resolves security access problems; maintains integrity of the security system
Reviews current technical information pertaining to the operation of computers, servers, peripheral equipment, and software
Develops documentation for systems administration procedures
Stays informed of new developments and technologies
Serves as a point of escalation for unusually complex technical issues encountered by end users

The ideal candidate for this position should possess a minimum of two years of experience with systems administration as well as a strong understanding of server operating systems, server hardware, databases, and backups and disaster recovery methodologies. You should be able to document and configure systems to be consistent with university policies/procedures, clearly communicate technical information both verbally and in writing, perform multiple tasks concurrently, respond to emergency situations effectively, and establish and maintain cooperation, understanding, trust and credibility with clients.
