The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Consultant. The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) is dedicated to sustaining healthy marine and freshwater environments. Our school comprises one of the largest and most diverse academic aquatic and fisheries sciences program in the United States. This position will develop integrated software and hardware systems that acquire and process active acoustic data on autonomous underwater vehicles. Applications will examine mesopelagic communities in the Gulf of Mexico and fish communities in the Gulf of Alaska. Responsibilities Include: •Design, develop, and improve software to tabulate acoustic data metric suite used to characterize 2-dimensional biomass distributions of fish and zooplankton from mobile and autonomous platforms. •Write and maintain documentation for custom computer applications. •Conduct tests of custom metric calculations to baseline measures. •Archive and distribute data and analytic results. •Manage and prepare collection of field data. Qualifications: BS Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Oceanography, or Marine Science. With three months to one year experience in devoloping integrated software and hardware systems that acquire and process active acoustic data on autonomous underwater vehicles. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration. Desired: •Programming experience in Python. •Experience with Linux operating system. •Design, coding, and debugging skills. •Experience integrating hardware and software to form data acquisition instrument packages. •Experience in data formats, metadata, and data management. •Training and familiarity with active acoustics theory. •Experience operating scientific sonars. •Experience in R, MatLab . •Experience working on boats and scientific fieldwork at sea Application Process: The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
