A postdoctoral Research Associate (Material Scientist) position is available in Dr. Mahmood Haq’s ‘Tailorable Materials and Structural Joining’ group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University. Dr. Haq’s research seeks to improve the understanding of tailored composite materials. Specifically, understanding of reversible adhesives and associated NDE in quasi-static and high-strain rate is of interest.
The Material Scientist is a key member of ‘Tailorable Materials and Structural Joining’ Group, taking a leading and / or supporting role in the manufacturing of composites, structural joints, experimental testing and computational simulations. The suitable candidate will support and / or lead multi-disciplinary teams focused on application of reversible adhesives and NDE. The role largely involves developing a deeper understanding of “structure-performance” relationships through appropriate design of experiments, development of advanced numerical methods, including finite element analysis, commercial multi-scale modeling tools and experimental validation to develop robust design tools. The successful candidate will work closely with chemists, electrical engineers and experimentalists as well as helping in developing new concepts to tackle various technical challenges. By taking advantage of the substantial laboratory testing and characterization facilities at CVRC, CMSC, and CIL the candidate will gather experimental data to validate the simulations.
Dr. Haq will work closely with the successful candidate in a collaborative lab environment to develop the project and help the trainee achieve their career goals.
The appointment will be for 12-months. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience
A Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering- Structures & Materials or equivalent.
Applicants must have Significant experience in Reversible Adhesives and Computational Design of Materials
Applicants must have strong oral and written communication skills.
Applicants Are expected to have a track record of multi-scale modeling and non-destructive evaluation (preferably fiber-optic sensing)
Applicants must have at least 3 years of micro-mechanical modeling experience.
Applicants are expected to work well in a team setting and be highly self-motivated.
Research expertise in experimental testing and non-destructive testing as described above. Furthermore, the candidate has capability to advise graduate and undergraduate researchers.
