NERSC operates some of the world's largest supercomputers and storage systems to solve today's most challenging computational problems. Scientists worldwide conduct their projects here with sponsorship from the Department of Energy's Office of Science. In this position, you'll work on the system that tracks and manages our active science projects and their use of compute and storage resources, help build an API to automate the use of supercomputing resources, and develop scripts and DevOps automation to manage our container, VM, and physical server platforms.
This is a great opportunity to learn about large-scale computational research while putting your software engineering skills to use. The new staff member will join a group of systems and software engineers who manage services coupled to the supercomputing environment and will work closely with others throughout the organization on a variety of projects.

Join other staff in the ongoing development of our project and usage tracking system
Work with researchers to understand how they want to automate their projects
Build and refine API endpoints to support new automation features
Develop and refactor scripts and other code for automating systems management
Additional responsibilities as needed:
Engage with colleagues at Berkeley Lab and other national research facilities to collaborate on shared solutions and
Present new developments at science conferences and industry meetings
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience and a minimum of eight years of related experience
Four or more years of experience developing web-based software using databases on Linux systems
Experience creating, modifying, and optimizing databases (such as MySQL or PostgreSQL)
Familiarity with container technology (such as Docker or Kubernetes)
Exposure to systems management technologies (such as Ansible or Puppet)
Ability to work with users to interpret needs, exercise judgment, and develop sustainable solutions
Keen technical problem-solving skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Creative, positive, and collaborative work style
Ability to work both independently and in groups in an energetic, diverse environment
Additional desired qualifications:
Experience managing Linux systems
Experience deploying and managing virtualization and/or container technologies
Experience managing networked storage systems
Ability to coordinate projects
