We’re looking for an outstanding Photonics R&D Engineer, with experience in optical / electronic systems development and a deep understanding of optical fibre communication systems and devices, to join our team and help develop the next generation of all-optical switch products for advanced optical networks. Materials science knowledge and experience of computational modelling in respect of optoelectronic devices and systems would also be beneficial.
About the Role
Polatis all-optical switches enable dynamic connectivity directly at the fibre layer, with outstanding reliability and the industry's lowest optical loss. Our products allow the efficient management of ever-increasing data volumes and are a key building block in the evolution towards software defined networks.
In this exciting new role, you’ll be working within a multi-disciplinary engineering team to develop the next generation of all-optical switch products, building on our award-winning DirectLight technology and investigating novel optical switching techniques. Your role will span the whole product lifecycle from requirements capture through design definition, development, qualification and deployment.
Your responsibilities will include:
Capture and refinement of requirements for new product developments
Derivation of performance and test specifications for subsystem elements
Computational modelling of materials, components and systems
Optical design, analysis and test of new components and end-to-end system
Project management of selected new product developments
To be successful, you’ll need to have a degree / PhD in physics, electronics, optoelectronics, or a related discipline, plus a minimum of five years’ experience in optical / electronic systems development gained in the telecom equipment or aerospace industries. As well as a deep understanding of optical fibre communication systems and devices you’ll also have a broad appreciation of systems engineering across the whole product lifecycle and be familiar with design for reliability, manufacturability and cost.
With a passion for ensuring product quality as well as on-time delivery, you’ll have excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate ideas and plans clearly to peers and customers alike. You’ll also need to be comfortable working as part of a cross-functional team in an agile environment and be self-motivated, organised and flexible. Above all, a flexible working style and the ability to switch between more theoretical (computational modelling) tasks and hands-on experimental investigations will serve you well in this role.
