Since 2003, Supply Chain Optics has been providing a huge variety of OEM optical parts to hi-tech manufacturers across the US and Canada. We are looking for entry-level Optics Lab Technicians to perform a variety of optics laboratory functions.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Set up and perform the most commonly used tests to qualify optical components according to our internal testing documentation and customer drawings.
Document the above testing work by recording & tabulating data.
Assist Metrology Lab Manager in the documentation of lab setups used to measure specific parts.
Help maintain and operate the metrology laboratory, such as repair & calibration of lab equipment.
Train and assist seasonal and part-time lab staff.
Unpack optical parts coming into the lab, in preparation for inspection.
Re-package optical parts after inspection
Visually inspect optical parts’ cosmetics. This includes inspecting surface quality per ISO and MIL specifications. Checking for cracks, chips, coating voids/bubbles and other cosmetic defects.
Read ANSI , ISO and MIL-spec optical component drawings
Test, inspect and clean optics per MIL-C-675C, Mil-C-14806A, MIL-C-48497A, MIL-F-48616 and MIL-M-13508C and MIL-PRF-13830B.
Plasma-clean of some specialized components
Assemble lens systems
Cement/glue opto-mechanical assemblies
Run environmental tests using our Thermotron SM humidity/temperature chamber
The Optics Lab Technicians are definitely not going to be doing the same thing day in and day out. The position will get exposure to a broad spectrum of optical testing methods and eventually working with all types of optical metrology tools including:
A variety of different Fizeau interferometers
Newton-ring (fringe) viewer
White light interferometer-based surface profiler
Coordinate measuring microscopes
Visual & electronic autocollimators
Laser & multi-spectral light sources
Optical power meters
Laser beam profiler
Lens focal length, centering and MTF tester
Interferometric radius slide
2D optical micrometers
Setups for characterizing polarization properties of mirrors
Setups for characterizing birefringence in optical materials
Customer-supplied functional-test systems.
These are entry-level positions so we are willing to accept new graduates.
Must be capable of reading & understanding inspection instructions, technical drawings and lab equipment user manuals.
Sufficient mechanical and visual to perform the metrology measurements or assembly work in accordance with the specifications.
An Optics Lab Technician has to often perform repetitive tasks requiring manual dexterity, patience, excellent eyesight, attention to detail and high throughput. An Optics Lab Technician needs to be able to follow written and verbal instructions with high accuracy. Some physical effort (lifting <50lbs) required. Position requires a mix of sitting and standing.
BS, associates degree in a STEM/technical filed, or equivalent technical schooling
Past exposure to any of the above-listed types of metrology tools is a plus.
Past exposure to statistical analysis using Excel, "R Software" or other tools
General computer skills
Work overtime as-needed
