Summary/Objective 

Responsible for the design, development, and testing of optical and electro/optical equipment, components, or systems. Applies mathematical and engineering principles and methods to system designs. Studies new technologies and researches innovative solutions and product designs. May work with research teams to identify needs or resolve problems. Works on advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state of the art technical or industry knowledge. Works under general supervision. Goals are generally communicated in solution or project goal terms. 

Competencies

• Development of advanced electro-optical systems
• Optical design with CAD software - Zemax
• Systems level design, test and implementation including optics, electronics, mechanics, and software integration
• Ability to learn and apply new programming tools and learn new technologies
• Document the design principles required to enable the production design, assembly and test procedures assuring that a skilled assembler can manufacture the new products. 
• Support the transfer of developed technologies to production
• Develop rough drafts of user manuals and assembly procedures as appropriate
• Develop and present technical presentations, write journal papers and submit patents on developed technology

Supervisory Responsibility

No direct reports. May provide a leadership role for the work group through knowledge in the area of specialization.
